Club EQ Album: June 2004 Challenge: Hawaiian Appliqué! Page 2

Design a block in the Hawaiian appliqué style, which means it can be cut as one piece from a square of fabric folded into a 1/8 wedge with one edge of the wedge on the bias and the other on the straight of grain. Your project file should include the single wedge as one block and the full design that wedge would make as a another block.
You may create a block or a motif (a block without a block outline).
Also include a quilt that uses your Hawaiian appliqué block. Your design does not have to use Hawaiian figures, only the appliqué style.

This is called Bugger-Bear because it has been the most "challenging challenge" I have done with EQ!

It still a challenge to try to create Hawaiian style blocks. But it was fun to see what I may produce by just drawing part of the design.

Heather Miller
Hibiscus Quilt

My first attempt at designing a Hawaiian quilt with EQ. I especially like the way the design looks completely different depending on whether you're viewing it as a cream design on red or a red design on a cream background.

Tropical Garden Quilt

The flowers and leaves were inspired by actual photos of philondendron, orchids, and calico flowers. I wanted to design something with a vine element. I was especially pleased with the secondary four petaled flower design created when the 1/8 wedge was repeated around.

Hawaiian Style Block Challenge

Began by drawing an eigth of a block, cloned, flipped, copied and pasted to the other quarters of the block. This was my first attempt at this type of block, and took me several tries. I still have a lot of practicing to do but have learned a lot.

Best of Baltimore Beauties

I based these on papercut blocks from the Peace & Plenty section of Elly's book. These were all drawn free-hand, not traced, so there shouldn't be any copyright problems. My things don't really like anywhere near as good as her's do!! I found this exercise to be totally addicting and very much like cutting snowflakes when we were little.

I hope to garner several more papercut/Hawaiian applique blocks from this exchange and *eventually do a full-size quilt like this. No matter how long I've had EQ and play with it, I'm still amazed at what it can do.

Keep up the great work!!

It will soon be time for my Hibiscus to bloom in the garden. I wish I had carnations blooming also but I just have no luck growing them but at least I can have them on my quilts.

I want to thank the two people who had posted directions on the internet for drafting Hawaiian blocks. Without their help, I could not have made this block. This has been my hardest challenge to date.

Torch Ginger

This pattern and its colors are inspired by the common torch ginger flower and by living so close to Kilauea volcano as Madame Pele continues to send fiery flows to the sea.
