Club EQ Album: February 2004 Challenge: Drunkard's Path! Page 6

Design a quilt with a block from the Drunkard's Path book (1 Classic Pieced) or from the Fans book (2 Contemporary Pieced) in the EQ5 Block Library. Or you may design your own block that has a square with a curved corner patch like the Drunkard's Path. The blocks in your quilt should have this Drunkard's Path block or variation as the primary (majority) block but you may introduce other complementary blocks.

Daisy Petal Fan

Daisy Petal Fan was changed in patch draw and then the symmetry tool was used to get the secondary puzzle piece design. This is my first challenge. The block is under motifs in the block portion of the sketchbook.

Path to the Sun

Williston, ND I used the attic windows block and drew a half circle to make a drunkard's path block. Next I resize a plain Drunkard's path block to match up to the Corner 9 block.

I'm not sure I would have the patience to piece this many curved seams but it is fun to draw with EQ!

Path through the roses

I designed this block by adding some curves to the traditional drunkards path block. It looked quite ordinary until I put it into the baby blocks setting. Then it took on an art deco look which I like very much.

Estrella d'Oro

Used Stars 13 Layout and the basic Drunkard's Path block which I rotated to echo the points of the star. Rotation of the blocks caused white lines to appear on some of the drunkard's path blocks but since all the blocks are the same size, I don't believe that would happen when making the quilt.

Shadow of the Fan

Based on the designs in "Shadow Quilts" The center medallion was created first by pulling a Fan Block out of the library and setting it in Layer 1. The motifs were created by Copying the Fan Block into a new OverLayed Block. The PatchDraw line drawing was used as guides as I drew the fan motif in the applique layer. I then copied the drawing out of the applique layer and creaated a new PatchDraw block where I could delete the block outline and the "shadow" could peek through. I used the tints and shades to create lighter colors of each fan blade. The final note is that I used the Divine Proportion to size the border. I had orgonally tried 1/2 of the Layer one block size and it was OK. The Divine Proportion was better... Thanks Barb. As usual, I always learn soemthing new doing these exercises!! Haymarket, VA

I made a similar quilt for GS Carter, using a combination of large and small drunken fish blocks in primary colors. It was a lot of fun.

Path of Doves

I used the Peace Dove block in the Drunkard's Path. I had so much fun playing with colors and rotating the block to get this mosaic. By using just 1 block but different color segways I I have come to appreciate the Drunkard's Path!! Using a points in border I rotated the Peace Dove block for a lacy effect. A Vonnie Original!!

Bonfire

Kansas. I was playing with the same block layout that I used in "Diamond in the Rough" and really liked the way that this block sat in the quilt. After about the 19th color scheme I had painted it with I found this. It reminds me of the bonfires we used to light at my dads house when I was a kid...the reds and yellows and oranges really ripple and twirl around when there is a breeze. I don't know if I'd ever make this one...I'm not much of an orange/red person, but I like the way it looks on the computer screen!

Diamond in the Rough

Kansas. I was up late one night and stumbled upon a home shopping channel that was selling gemstones of all sorts. They had ben cut and polished and some of them were selling at a pretty high price. One of the diamonds that they were selling was a champagne colored diamond...and I tried to imagine what it would look like still in the stone, rough and uncut. As I drifted off to sleep, I had this vision of a quilt, one that captured the sparkle of the stone...and I think that I was able to recreate it here. I used the floating fan block in the library, and gave it a twist and colors all its own. I'd love to make this quilt with the jeweltones I designed it with.

Grandpa's Gumdrops

After about the fifth quilt and not liking any of them I desided that sometimes simplicity is the best choice. This is just the baby block layout and the drunkards path block, but rotating the blocks creates the shape of gumdrops! I do not usually play in the 30's fabrics, but this just seemed to scream at me to use them.
