The Connecting Threads Round Robin Project

[Counting Threads Group photo]

We heard about a wonderful Round Robin quilt project in which EQ4 played a part. Naturally, we were curious. Here's the story: (it may suggest ways to start your own Round Robin quilt project).
In August of 2000, eight friends from Connecting Threads' customer service department started a Round Robin project. A Round Robin is a progressive, medallion-style quilt. One person creates a quilt center, passes it to a second person, who adds a border, and so on until the quilt top is finished. (Think of a progressive dinner, where eaters go from house to house).

[After 3 passes]Each of the eight friends made a center quilt block. These eight blocks were handed off to the other seven quilters, with each adding a border in turn, until there were eight finished quilt tops. (See the quilts, half-done, at right.)

One of their biggest challenges was the need for secrecy, since these quilters work together every day.
"People would act as bodyguards to prevent anyone from seeing their own quilt."

Their surveillance payed off. None of the original quilters got to see her quilt until it was completely finished.

EQ4 helped in the project, as Karen and Lorrie used EQ4 to help others calculate block sizes to fit each uniquely sized round. Lorrie writes about the process of collaborative designing: "I was a little intimidated at first since I'm such a a pastel person...I finally got brave enough to try EQ4, and used it to print the foundation patterns for the next border."
