Printing One-Patch Templates from EQ4
by Anita Grossman Solomon
[Diamonds in the Rough quilt]

Anita uses EQ4 to create one-patch templates for the classes she teaches. Her sample top, Diamonds in the Rough, (shown at right) is for her ongoing One Patch class series taught at New York City's store, City Quilter. Anita shares her tips and the project file containing the Tumbler and Diamond block with you here.
Download file

Freezer paper one-patch templates
  1. Open the onepatch project.
  2. In the Sketchbook, click on the block you want, then click the Edit button. The block gets sent down to the Worktable.
  3. To print the Tumbler:
    • Click FILE - Print - Block.
    • Printing style: Outline drawing.
    • Size: Width = 7.5" Height = 9".
To print the Diamond you must first change the printer setting to print "landscape," across the paper length:
    • Click FILE Page Setup - Landscape.
    • Then click FILE - Print - Block.
    • Size: Width = 9.125" Height = 6.75.

  4. Print the block onto the non-shiny-side of freezer paper you've cut into an 8-1/2" x 11 sheet. Depending on your printer, extra sheets may print out. This is because your printer determines the margin, and normally a 7.5" block is as wide as you can print. If EQ senses that your printer needs a larger margin, EQ will print the rest of the block on another sheet of paper. Try decreasing your printer margin. To do this in EQ, click FILE - Page Setup. Set the right and left margins for .5 or .4. Your printer may or may not allow this.
  5. Staple this printed sheet on top of a stack of blank 8-1/2" x 11 freezer paper sheets. Put a staple in each tumbler so the individual templates won't fly apart when you rotary cut the template.
  6. Cut out the templates using your rotary cutter.
Vinyl one-patch templates
  1. Print the block onto an 8-1/2 x 11" Avery label. (It's a full page label). Follow the sizes listed above.
  2. Press the label to a piece of vinyl. (I use loose vinyl file folders from stationers in florescent colors. I cut at fold of folder to yield two sheets of vinyl).
  3. Cut out the templates with your rotary cutter, following the printed lines.
