EQ7 Frequently Asked Questions

Jump to FAQ: About System Requirements, About Activation & Deactivation, About the EQ6 to EQ7 Upgrade

About System Requirements

I don’t have Windows® XP, Vista, or 7. Will EQ7 work on my computer?

No, EQ7 only runs on Windows® XP and newer operating systems.

Will EQ7 run on my Mac?

EQ7 is a Windows program. So to run EQ7 on a Mac, the Mac must be set up to run Windows programs. This means the Mac would need both a virtualization software, such as Parallels, and a copy of Windows XP, Vista or 7. VMWare Fusion is not recommended due to unresolvable support issues some of our customers have experienced. If you are interested in running your EQ on a Mac you may want to subscribe to the free EQonMacs yahoo group, run by Sheila Williams. This group tech supports itself and welcomes new or potential users with questions.

I don’t have internet access. Will I be able to install EQ7?

No. We’re sorry, but internet access is necessary for activation, registration, periodic validation, and deactivation.

I often like to work on my computer outside, when it's not connected to the Internet. Will this work with EQ7?

After the program is installed, activated and registered, you can use EQ7 while not connected to the internet until validation is required. Then connect to the internet, validate the program, and you can remain unconnected until the next required validation.

I have a Netbook. You say EQ7 is Netbook compatible. What does that mean?

Although the program is designed for 1024x768 and higher resolutions, we have included new default settings options you can change after installing that make the windows and other screens netbook-friendly. If you have purchased the program and would like to change these settings, see page 14 in the EQ7 User Manual for directions.

My Netbook doesn't have a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. How do I install?

To install on a Netbook that has only USB flash drive ports, you would either need a removable/external CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that can hook to your Netbook via a USB port or access to another computer that has a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive and a USB flash drive. For step by step instructions, see our support pages for EQ7 Installation questions.

About Activation & Deactivation

Does EQ7 use the same activation system as EQ6?

No. We listened to many EQ6 users who indicated they wanted some way to deactivate in order to "keep" an activation from an old computer to put onto a new computer. So we have totally redone EQ7's activation system based on this user feedback.

Does it take an activation each time I have to reinstall the program?

Installations and activations are completely different. You can install EQ7 unlimited times. You can have two computers active at the same time. We have also included Deactivation technology with EQ7, so you can easily manage which computers are active and which are not.

I get new computers all the time and update my old computers' hardware frequently. Will I use up my activations quickly?

The EQ7 activation is significantly improved over the EQ6 activation system. We have now included Deactivation technology with EQ7. This allows you to manage your active computers. You can have two computers active at the same time. You can have many computers with EQ7 installed and deactivated.

If you plan to reformat a hard drive, swap out hard drives/mother boards/etc., simply connect to the internet, deactivate EQ7 to return one of your licenses to the activation server, reformat or make your changes, and then open EQ7 while connected to the internet and re-activate.

If you plan on retiring/selling/giving away a computer, or returning it to the manufacturer for replacement, connect to the internet, and deactivate EQ7 to return one of your licenses to the activation server, then uninstall EQ7.

My computer crashed and I didn't have a chance to deactivate. Have I lost the activation?

In the case of a computer crash that is not repairable, you should contact The Electric Quilt Company. We have the ability to deactivate your dead computer from the activation server so that you will continue to always be able to have two active computers.

When you purchase software, most or at least some software only allow you to legally install on one computer. So if you have a PC and a laptop, that would require two separately purchased and registered copies to be legal. Is that true for EQ7 as well?

We allow more installation possibilities and give you control over activation and deactivation so you can manage your own computers. We realize you may have a desktop, a laptop, a computer at work, and possibly one at another home, and want to install EQ7 on all of them. This does not break copyright law or the licensing agreement, since *you* are the only one using EQ7 on these computers. Two computers can be active at a time. It would be up to you to activate and deactivate computers to use EQ7 when and where you need it.

I teach and demonstrate. How will the activations limit affect me?

We have a plan for providing Teacher CDs for those who are teaching EQ7 classes. Teachers will not need to use their own CDs to install on classroom computers. Please contact techsupport@electricquilt.com for information on the Teaching Program at least one month before your class so you can order and receive the teacher packet in the mail in plenty of time. You will be required to contact techsupport@electricquilt.com again closer to your class date in order for the files to work. Also, give us your class location, date, and times so we can list your class on our website to help potential new students find you.

About the EQ6 to EQ7 Upgrade

Who can install the EQ7 Upgrade?

Licensed users of EQ6 or the EQ6 Upgrade can purchase and install the EQ7 Upgrade.

I am concerned about running out of EQ6 activations with regards to installing EQ7 on my computer.

We have completely redone the installation and activation process with EQ7. EQ6 does not need to be installed on the computer prior to installing EQ7. You just need to type in your EQ6 license ID and password during the EQ7 setup. If you lose your EQ6 CD or run out of EQ6 activations, you will still be able to install the EQ7 Upgrade. Just don't lose your EQ6 License ID and Password.

And don't worry. You’ll never run out of EQ7 activations! Activation and deactivation is as easy as two clicks of the mouse. Install on as many computers as you like and quickly transfer activations from computer to computer. This new policy gives you complete freedom to manage your own activations --- and no dongle to worry about!

When I install EQ7, will I be able to maintain and run both EQ6 and EQ7 on the same computer?

Yes. EQ6 will work independently of EQ7, and you can have both on the same computer.

If I get the EQ7 Upgrade, will I still get the EQ7 User Manual?

Yes. Once installed, the EQ7 Upgrade is identical to EQ7. The only difference is that the CD for the EQ7 Upgrade will install only if you are a licensed user of Electric Quilt® 6 (EQ6) or the Electric Quilt® 6 Upgrade (EQ6 Upgrade). EQ6 does not need to be installed on the computer prior to installing the EQ7 Upgrade. Instead, you will need to provide your EQ6 License ID and Password during the EQ7 Upgrade installation.

If I have EQ5, can I upgrade directly to EQ7 or do I have to order the EQ6 Upgrade and the EQ7 Upgrade?

If you are a registered EQ5 user, you can get an upgrade discount for EQ7. Contact sales@electricquilt.com, or
call 1-800-356-4219 (Monday-Friday, 9-5pm Eastern).

I have EQ1, EQ2, EQ3, or EQ4, can I get the EQ7 Upgrade or a discount?

No. We're sorry, but your software is 12-20 years old. You will need to get the complete EQ7 program at its full price.

What will happen to my EQ6 projects if I open them in EQ7?

When you open an EQ6 (PJ6) file in EQ7, the file will be Untitled. So your EQ6 file will remain in EQ6, untouched. You will also now have a copy of it in EQ7 and can work on it and save it in EQ7, which will make it an EQ7 file. You can also import items (blocks, fabrics, photos, etc.) from existing EQ6 projects into your EQ7 projects through the Library.

Will all my other EQ Company software and add-ons, like BlockBase, Dear Jane, Kaleidoscope Collection, and Quilting Designs link with EQ7?

Yes. Anything that worked with EQ6 will work with EQ7 as well. See our support pages for EQ7 Linking Information if you would like specific steps.

I bought the EQ7 Upgrade by mistake. I don’t have EQ6. Can I return it?

An unopened copy of EQ7 Upgrade can be returned for credit toward a purchase of a full version of EQ7 with no restocking fee. You will be required to pay the price difference along with shipping costs.

An opened copy can also be returned but will incur a small restocking fee as well as the price difference and shipping costs. Contact The Electric Quilt Company (no matter who you originally purchased your EQ7 Upgrade from) at sales@electricquilt.com, or call 1-800-356-4219 (Monday-Friday, 9-5 Eastern).
