More than $22,000 in prizes will be awarded!

Congratulations!

All the blocks have been submitted and are in the judging phase now.

What is the contest?

Design a Rose of Sharon block using EQ6, submit it, and you could win!

We have an Electric Quilt 6 project just waiting for your design talents. It's filled with shapes and fabrics for making your very own Rose of Sharon blocks. You just need to put the shapes together and color!

Blocks will go through two rounds of judging. Make it through the first round and your block designs could be featured in an upcoming Rose of Sharon book and DVD and sent to Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims for round two.

If Alex & Ricky select your design as part of the top twelve designs, you would win a ton of cool prizes. The best 12 blocks will be on the cover of the book and made into a Rose of Sharon quilt, and up to 100 of the designs submitted will be in the book.

What's the entry fee?

There is no entry fee. Entering the contest if free, but we ask that you please consider making a donation to The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.

How is it judged?

The entries will be compiled by The Electric Quilt Company and forwarded to Nine Patch Media for the initial round of judging..

Nine Patch Media will select the best 50 block designs from among all the entries submitted. From these, celebrity Judges Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims will pick the 12 winning block designs which will be incorporated in the Rose of Sharon Quilt and featured in Sharon Pederson's Rose of Sharon book and DVD. Rose of Sharon Block Design Challenge General Challenge Rules & Requirements

1)

You must design an original 12 inch Rose of Sharon quilt block using only three pattern shapes - the blossom, the leaf, and a circle. You do not need to use all shape sizes at the same time in the same block. The block does not have to be sewn by you, just designed by you in The Electric Quilt Company's EQ6 software. The Rose of Sharon appliqué shapes in the downloadable challenge file must be used in the entry, and can appear in any combination in the block. The shapes may not be re-sized or re-shaped, you must use the variety of sizes provided.

The use of stems to enhance the design is at your discretion. If you use stems in your design they must be 1/4 inch wide.

The blocks must be designed using the Island Batik fabrics supplied in the downloadable file. Use the lightest, beige fabric ("Neutrals by Island Batik", the first fabric in the file) as your background fabric. The blocks can be designed to accommodate a horizontal or on-point layout.

2)

Judging emphasizes originality, and creativity, creative use of the appliqué shapes as they relate to the overall design of the Rose of Sharon block, visual impact and design composition. Creative use of all of the 19 Island Batik Challenge fabrics will also be considered.

3)

Designs must be your own original creation and be received by midnight Pacific Time on November 15, 2009. The decision of the judges will be final and in the event of duplicate designs being submitted, the one with the earliest submission date will be considered.

The sponsors are not responsible for late, lost, or misdirected entries.

4)

Up to 100 of the blocks submitted may be used to create a Rose of Sharon Block book that will be published by Martingale and Company. Designers of the up to 100 blocks will be given credit in the book.

5)

Twelve winning Rose of Sharon entries will be chosen. These twelve blocks will be made into a Rose of Sharon quilt by Sharon Pederson and Barbara Shapel that will be used on the cover of the Rose of Sharon book and instructional DVD. Designers of the winning blocks will be given credit in the book and on the DVD. The winning blocks will also be used to create a digitized embroidery CD that will also be made into a quilt. Designers of the winning blocks will be given credit on the CD.

6)

Challenge winners will be announced at Spring Quilt Market on May 21, 2010, in Minneapolis, Minnesota and on the Partners’ web sites.
