Club EQ Album: September 1999 Challenge: Storm at Sea

"Let's take one block and see what we can do with it. The Storm at Sea block is the first block in the EQ Libraries under 1 Classic Pieced, Old Favorites. Take the block, color it, skew it, distort it, redraw it."

09barbv1.gif BarbV IL "With Dennis on My Mind". My newlyweds are home from their honeymoon in the Bahamas, and guess what followed them? Hurricane Dennis! With my kids safe at home, my heart went out to those facing the dangers and devastation of the hurricane. 09barbv.zip, which contains 09barbv.pj4, available for download at the clubEQ webpage
09barbv2.gif BarbV IL "Any Port in a Storm". I skewed lines in the block to create something kind of different. Then I used various symmetries (I rotated blocks) to find a setting that I liked. Look for instructions for doing this in "EQ4 Magic", due out by Christmas. 09barbv.zip, which contains 09barbv.pj4, available for download at the clubEQ webpage
09sara Sara I have practically turned into a cyclops in the last week from watching the weather channel to see if Ocean Dunes, our house on Hatteras Island, has become Under the Ocean Dunes--so I named this quilt "Here's Looking at You, Dennis." nysara@umailme.com Ask for September1999 clubEQ challenge project file.

09tenna.gif Tenna I really didn't get to fancy with skewing or coloring. I really like geometrics, and play with them all the time. When I saw the block, I saw birds initially, but then the Lions came out, and I had to go that way...but the Swallows are still there. drapert@grebner.com Ask for September1999 clubEQ challenge project file. website

09nina-m.gif Nina-Marie PA "Sacred Storms" An original design. Stained glass windows always fascinated me since I was a little girl. When I started fooling with this one block I came up with a pattern that reminded me of a stain glass window at night - maybe a stormy night!! qudiva@velocity.net Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.

09faith Faith in Sunny Wisconsin "Hawaiian Storm" Well, autumn is almost upon us. I have my challenge quilt design ready and am sending it. This month I decided to put some Hawaiian quilting designs into my challenge. I bet lots of gals will do that. It has been fun playing with the Hawaiian designs in EQ4. I think Fleur-de-lies is a paper cut design like Hawaiian design. I saw an article about it in QNL years ago but to me it looked quite similiar. faith@coredcs.com Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.
09jane1.gif Jane/Ontario "Storm Strike I" I added a few lines to theStorm At Sea block and set in a horizontal set. I chose rather dramatic colours so that the emerging patterns from the block placement would show up well. janecharnley@sympatico.ca Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.

09carol.gif Carol IA "Escape from the Aquarium" This is a variation of Storm at Sea that I made for my son. So far it has been winning awards and he can't have it. The fish block was taken from a Storm at Sea book. I played with the block and put it in the borders to cut the monotony. Then it definitely looked like some of the fish got away--thus "Escape from the Aquarium". The materials are close to what I used--scrappy, bright fish and water prints. I made this bigger for my 6'4" little boy. cabald@gateway.net (cabald) Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.
09pat Pat FL "Which Way Away from the Storm?" When the Storm at Sea blocks were placed in a Diamond Blocks border, they looked like arrows pointing away from the center, which is the storm. The Storm at Sea blocks in the corners of the border look like airplanes, flying away from the storm. And there is a star in the center of the storm, promising that all will clear. 09pat.pj4 available for download at the clubEQ webpage
09cherl1 Cheryl in New Hampshire I found it easier to design with the block if I broke it up into its component parts or put it back together into a symmetrical block. cwjohn@mediaone.net Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.

09sherr1.gif Sherry in central CA "Stormflower" I used layer 2 to skew the Storm at Sea block into diamonds over a Lemoyne Star in layer 1. I then colored the design on the quilt. wecycle@telis.org Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.
09sherr2.gif Sherry in central CA "Summer Storm" I altered the Storm at Sea block by removing several of the lines, and used this altered block in the corners. wecycle@telis.org Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.

09clare.gif Clarine Windsor, Ontario "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" I would never have thought that "Storm At Sea" could look so different. Without EQ I know I would never have been able to see "beyond the pattern" so to speak. It's really nice to say "It's not really me but I really like it." Perhaps I'm breaking a mold...and that's not a bad thing. maiolani@MNSi.Net Ask for September clubEQ challenge project file.
