June 2010 Challenge: Baby Quilts! (Page 1)
Design a quilt for a baby. We’ll do this in honor of Andrea, the EQ webmistress
(among a lot of other things), who will be a mother for the first time very
soon (Andrea and her husband Matt are expecting a boy the end of July).
Baby quilts can come in many sizes, colors and styles. Design a pieced,
appliquéd, or whole cloth quilt.

It's always a challenge to set 26 alphabet blocks in a balanced layout, but I think this one works. Color with the sophisticated decorating colors that are popular this season. St. Charles, Illinois, USA
|
The "Yellow Brick Road" block is easy and fast piecing and provides a great way to play with lots of fabrics. When set into a quilt, the block can be rotated with the Symmetry tool to provide lots of possibilities! The Moda Funky Monkey fabrics are just too cute! St. Charles, Illinois, USA |
Baby Blocks. I plan to used fabric with suitable
motif for a baby in the center patch of each star. |
Baby Quilts -I scanned the car fabric and turned
the photo into fabric. (Very easy to do in EQ7) The appliqued cars
were traced in patchdraw.

I drew a block for the border that would be easy to foundation/paper piece. For easy letter placement, I used the wreath feature to get a ring of circles and put this block on layer one. Then I set a hodge-podge of letter fonts over the circles on layer two. Last, I zapped the poor nameless wreath block and gave the quilt a solid color center. I used solid colors to keep the project file size small but if I made this in real life, I would use a plethora of fabric prints for the applique and for the flying geese in the border, too. These are just blocks straight from the EQ library ... tweaked a bit. I moved the applique to the left of the block and then set it into the Layout -- Block Turned Quilt - 19 (Four X). I also drew a better corner block for the Triple 3-D Zig Zag auto-border (well, I think it's better anyhow). I used several EQ features to get my color palette. First I colored all the bears different tints or tones of a blue and saved the quilt. Then I used the shift hue feature of the Random Recolor tool several times and saved each quilt. Then I popped one block from four colorations into a quilt and gave them all black eyes and noses. I used all solid colors except for the border red ... which reads as a solid anyway. It's always hard to find a baby quilt suitable for
a boy. This is one that will grow with him. Large blocks with a novetly
car fabric and applique cars. |
Needham, MA I designed the flower appliques using the wreathmaker function, then
used the same design as a quilting template for the alternate blocks. |

I started playing with this design in EQ5 a few years ago. With a grandson on the way in 2009, I resurrected it in EQ6, played with the 'Text' tool, but didn't put the final polish to the file until now. The quilt was designed for Robert Turgeon, born October 2, 2009. The idea is from Tracey Brookshire but is sized to be either a cuddle quilt or a wall hanging. The real quilt has been presented to Robert. Thank you to Gordon Cooper for pointing out what a nice font Ravie is for applique. |

I started out with block 1018.4 from BlockBase in an on point setting. Because I did not like the half blocks that I ended up with on the sides of the quilt, I drew a different block that would achieve the same look, but without half blocks on the side. I used one of the Autoblock borders with vines and pasted heart motifs
over them on layer 2. |

Germany I think little boys loves cars and building bricks. So I combined these two items. |
This is a similar layout to a quilt I made and I
thought it might work out for a baby quilt. The blocks could be applique,
embroidery or even pieced blocks.

I used blocks from the library; I made a similar
patch for one of my niece with a yellow/red/black sashong and borders. |
A simple design to enjoy using multiple fabrics and colors. All blocks are from the EQ library. The stretched blocks and sashing are configured for actual sewing. This baby quilt measures 40 x 44. Club EQ challenge for June, 2010 Huntington, IN
