January 2010 Challenge: Calendar quilts! (Page 1)
EQ user Bev Adcock suggested this challenge to design a calendar with a
quilt design that could be used as wallpaper in a quilter’s computer. There
have been calendars offered on EQ users web sites. Now it’s time to create
one of your own. Choose your birthday month or another month in 2010 and
submit a calendar quilt for the challenge.

Designed for clubEQ, January, 2010: Calendar quilts. My anniversary is in April, so I used wedding floral motifs for this
calendar. St. Charles, Illinois, USA |
This quilt is on a custon layout. July has a number
of birthdays in our family, So I used the "birthday cake"
in the library and added extra candles. Th lone star is a celebration
and the blue flowers for July. |
September is our wedding month so I used the Double
Wedding Ring block from Block Base (302). The heart was added on Level
2. |

The photo of the cat asleep on the dog's shoulders is one I harvested from an email. When the calendar quilt was finished, I exported it to 'Paint' and filled the background with a nifty dark green color. Sunnyside, Washington
|
I do use a calendar as my wallpaper or background but I draw them directly in the 'Paint' program that comes with Windows. I prefer to keep the calendar restricted to half or smaller portion of the monitor screen. That leaves the rest of the area for large icons. This one for September 2010 fits the bill nicely. Nothing original here except the one-block border I drew. This challenge was fun to do. Sunnyside, Washington

Our anniversary is in October so I designed my calendar
for that month. If I were making this for real, I'd design it with
a sleeve in the bottom half so that I could slip a paper calendar
into it and change the months as needed. |

I'm an autumn baby, born on 3 October. I love the time of year when the leaves change colour and in good years this stretches into early October for my birthday! Guildford, England |
I thought it would be fun to bring an international theme to my challenge, so as I am English, my calendar page is celebrating the birthday of our Queen. Although Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April in 1926, her birthday is actually officially celebrated in Britain on the 3rd Saturday in June each year - I have no idea why, other than perhaps the "real" date clashes with our Easter holiday. In July 2010 there is a total solar eclipse visible in some parts of the world. I will be fortunate enough to be on a tiny atoll in the Pacific to see this spectacle, so I thought it was worthy of a calendar entry. My very rough representation of an eclipse is a modified version of an EQ contemporary applique block 'Curly Flower with Centre'. Perth Western Australia |
January 26 is Australia Day. The flag, the sea and the first few lines from "Advance Australia Fair", our national anthem, are all depicting this. Even the choice of blue and yellow for the border is to represent the sunshine and blue skies to be expected just about anywhere in Australia in January. Perth Western Australia |
