Designed for clubEQ challenge, November, 2009: Two Block Surprises!

One block reminded me of floor tiles and the other of a ceiling fan. They work together because they are both based on a 4-patch grid. The elongated Drunkard's Path outlines the "room" with a chain effect.

I paired two unlikely blocks from the Contemporary Pieced block library and got a masculine looking (and sounding, from the names of the blocks) quilt. The two blocks work together because they use the Kaleidoscope grid for patches.

For this challenge, I used two vintage blocks found in BlockBase - #4064 Jinx Stars and #4096 Grandmas Fan. I thought this setting would be good for using charms and scraps.

For this challenge, I used two vintage blocks found in BlockBase - #4064 Jinx Stars and #4096 Grandmas Fan. I thought this layout looked suprisingly modern.

I set the Summer Winds and Ornate Star blocks side by side and they started circling. I used half of each block -- tweaked a little -- to form an inner border.

The blue/purple fabric is Marble Mate by Moda.

The masculine block King's Crown pairs with the delicate Grandmother's Puzzle as they circle the ballroom in a waltz.

Most of the quilts I tried out for this challenge were in an every-other setting. For this one I set two rounds of King's Crown in the center and then surrounded that with every-other. The rest is simply rotation.

This was fun.

This quilt combines the two library blocks Summer Winds and Wyoming Valley. I liked the skewed star that happened at the block intersections.

This quilt combines the two library blocks Five Patch Chain and Providence Quilt Block. I used layer 2 to extend the design and then clipped at the edge. I wanted to put another solid coloured border beyond this but didn't know how to make it work.

This is another design I tried when making the quilt for my mom. The blocks are made using the Lazy Angle Ruler.

This is a lapquilt I designed, pieced and quilted for my mom for her 92nd birthday 2 years ago. She used it alot, seems like it was always on her foot stool when we came to visit. Just past her next birthday, her health was declining rapidly. By then my husband and I had moved and built onto her house. The last month or so of her life the quilt was always there, covering her, and it covered her as she left her home for the last time. It's been almost a year since she left us - how appropriate that this particular challenge would come up so close to the anniversary of her death. I'm so glad that I made this quilt for her.
The centers of the blocks are fussy cuts of Minnesota things--pine trees, Lady Slippers, lily pads, pine cones, loons. She lived her life amid pine trees, and at one time had the Pink and White Lady Slipper [the Minnesota State Flower] near her home.

I used two blocks from the Contemporary Pieced Block section. I then played with the coloring of the fabrics to minimize the windmills. I think it sort of makes the design look like it's swirling around.

For this challenge, I merged the String Star block (twice) into a Broken Sash Strip block. These merged blocks were alternated with 8 Grid Chain blocks and given a Southwestern color scheme. The stars reminds me of a concho belt.

This quilt reminded me of the butterflies that visit my flower beds in the summer.

When I was finished colouring this quilt it reminded me of plants growing in water so I added some applique motifs of water lilies and fish. I quite enjoyed working on this project and playing with combining blocks that I otherwise might not have even looked at.

The Kaleidoscope Star block combines with an uneven cross to make a quilt that implies circles, but has no curved pieceing. The border is one of EQs Auto Borders.

I decided to make the alternate block with straight lines, instead of curves. I rotated some of the altenate blocks to give a weaving effect.

But, this quilt would probably be much easier to put together with diagonal rows and sashing.

I guess I'm on a Christmas threme here, and that will probably be the challenge next month!! I took two blocks from blockbase and then . It seems I got the fussy cut and rotate exercise in the quilt :) I always leann something and tonight I figured out how to do a mitered border. Well, I knew how to do with fabric, now I can draw one too :)

I love two block quilts,, this was a great challenge. AND a challenge for time management with the Quiltmaker contest and Thanksgiving. all in the same weekend!

Is this a horizontal or On point setting?

Two block out of Block base, I like how the block lines merge into what looks like a horizontal set block with sashing. Just in time for some Christmas sewing.
