February 2009 Challenge: Hexagons! (Page 2)

Start a new PatchDraw Block in EQ6. Set the Grid style to be "Circle" and the Spokes to be a multiple of 6. Draw a hexagon using the PolyLine and PolyArc tools and do not fill in the background to make it into a square. Use this EQ6 layout to CTRL+click your design into the quilt.

I'm not totally convinced my hexagon block is precise enough for actually sewing this quilt. I think I would have to work on it a bit more. I tried putting the blocks in every space, but felt the quilt was too overpowering and preferred this strip quilt arrangement in the end.

Guildford, England

This is the same block, set in a different arrangement and coloured to give an impression of a night sky. I could have mase the stars "twinkle" more with some yellow colouring, but preferred this more subdued colouring.

I drew the pinwheels, then framed each pinwheel. I wanted to see what designs would appear when coloring different parts of some frames.
This design reminded me of steps to a central platform.

This design reminded me of a faceted jewel.

I followed Patti Anderson's instructions in EQ6 Pieced Drawing book so this isn't very original except that "I" did it! Will still have to play with the hexagon on the circle grid because the sticky blue line refused to cooperate beyond the outside edge! At least I learned how to make the triangle grid and that was fun!

What a fun challenge and in the process I discovered a number features I hadn't used before in EQ. I just randomly "chopped" each wedge until I found a design that I liked. Once coloured this reminded me of ice crystals.

Ontario, Canada

I started with an plain hexagon, curved the sides of each wedge and then placed an appliqued flower on top. This would be a great project to use up green and yellow fabric from my stash.

When I started experimenting with the hexagon blocks, my first block looked like a star, so the theme grew from there.

Toronto, Canada

I decided to see if I could draw curves in my hexagons, and came up with this block design. I had to change the grid to 4x4 rather than 6x6 to draw the centre circles. When I started colouring the patches, the circles seemed to float above the hexagons, like bubbles floating.

This is the first time for me to submit a challenge quilt. I have only been using Electric Quilt for a little over a week. I made the block just using the instructions from Barb Vlack in the challenge. I also used her layout. I used the random coloring tool and rotated the blocks until I came up with something I liked. I had put some batik fabrics in the sketchbook, hence the Asian look. The quilt I ended up with reminded me of strings of beads.

This is the first time for me to submit a challenge quilt. I have only been using Electric Quilt for a little over a week. I came up with the name for this quilt when I noticed the rectangular shapes that were formed after inserting the hexagon blocks with wonky stars. If I colored them the right shade of green, they looked like money.

This layout was the Vertical Hexagon block.
I found that any of the horizontal hexagons could be used on this layout if I rotate the blocks after placing them on the quilt layout.

The layout is horizontal Hexagon, one patch quilt.

This proved more difficult that it appeared at first glance. I'm not sure if this is what Barb had in mind, but . . .
