Design a quilt or two that can be pieced with a foundation. The foundation piecing should be the major construction technique, though you may add design elements that require a different construction method, such as appliqué. Try designing your own foundation pattern with EasyDraw! Or alter a foundation pattern from the EQ6 block library. You may make some great discoveries for new blocks.

My friend, Susanna, challenged our Rather Bees quilting group to piece these blocks and design a quilt with them. I added applique designs to fill in some of the negative spaces. This quilt is currently a work in progress. The pieced blocks are finished. I think I'll use felted wool for the applique and add beads for embellishment. St. Charles, Illinois, USA |
Believe it or not, this entire quilt design can be foundation pieced. There is not a curved seam in it! The block is original, inspired by an irregular grid layout in the EQ6 Layout Library. Blocks were set in the Variable Point quilt layout. St. Charles, Illinois, USA |
Our guild was asked to create heart quilts for the cardiac unit of our hospital, small quilts for patient rooms, wall hangings or a larger quilt for the nurses's station or hallway. We had a size and color restriction, but as I played around with designs for the project, I decided to take it a step further and use the January challenge as a way to solve the problem. Valentine's Day is also approaching. The diagonal striped block is from the EQ Library, The vertical striped block I created to meet the paper piecing requirement. Williamsburg, VA

Black adds a nice touch to this design. I might think twice before actually piecing 144 blocks. :-) Florida |

My fpp block for this quilt started out to be very much like a skewed Log Cabin -- 11 pieces total. Then it took on a mind of its own and turned out to have 22 pieces and a sort of tapestry look. The block is in two colorings, a positive and a negative, and the setting is one I have used for a standard Log Cabin block. Great fun! Sunnyside, Washington

A simple-yet-spectacular fpp block -- that was the goal. I didn't make it. This block has eight sections so it can't be termed bed-rock simple. But the units are easy to sew together -- easier than your traditional Feathered Star, anyway! The joining order is on block notecard. As for spectacular, that is in the eye of the beholder ... Ms Adelaide was inspired by the cover of a Dick Blick catalog. Sunnyside, Washington

I like the movement with uneven log cabin blocks and this can be completely foundation pieced with some pre-piecing. The red corners have to be pre-sewn to the appropriate log before adding the unit to the foundation. This technique was in a commercial pattern that I made once and it works well. I think this one has quite a modern look. Ontario Canada |
The addition of the border blocks turned this quilt into something very funky and fun. Ontario Canada |
A simple hand-drawn block was inserted in the interior of the Star 22 layout. EQ6's "Roses and Butterfly" was used in the background. Texas |
I wished I could spend more time on this challenge by drawing my own snowflakes... But fortunately for me EQ library has some of them! |

I love NY Beauty quilts and I love math so I used the mathematical pattern of the golden rectangle combined with NY Beauty blocks. I haven't made one yet but I'm getting closer. I enjoy paperpiecing. West Columbia, SC |
