August 2008 Challenge: Postcards! (Page 2)

Design a quilt postcard that is 4" x 6". It can be any style, but it must be only 4" by 6" in size. The card can be oriented horizontally or vertically. A fabric postcard can actually be sent through the mail if it is stiffened enough to feed through the postage machines. It would be great to make several to keep on hand for special occasions!

Family Reunion Postcard

There are 4 pianists in our family. I now have a postcard design for them.

Northeastern Ontario

I drew a block for the center of the card so I would have a window in the middle. In the window I placed a snowman.

I used the vertical strip layout and split the postcard into two strips so the right side of the card would be a square. In the square I put the "Ghost Walk" block and then placed the appliqued pumpkin in the plain black block.

Our whole family loves cats.
Each cat was photographed separately, since they don't all get along. I used JASC Paint Shop Pro to group them on a scanned piece of floral fabric from my stash. Then I printed it on printable fabric.
Any photo would work great.

A postcard from my home town.
The two large balls are locally known as "the Mall's balls" - larger than life metal balls as a sculpture in Rundle Mall - the main shopping area in the city.
They are a common meeting spot for people - "meet you at the mall's balls" :-)

This is a reworking of an earlier Violet design. Now that it is 'totally Vi" with the correct flowers and butterfly, it may become a real wallhanging

Sweet Water Lilies

Last year we had a snowday the day before a solstice gathering of 8 friends. My hope had been seven cards with 'easily' paper pieced stars. In the end, there were seven diamond in a rectangle cards, each featuring a specially selected piece of fussy cut winter fabric. The recipients were just as happy, and I truly wished I had started with the carefully selected faries, dogs, and snowpeople, rather than the time consuming off-kilter stars. This star is an adpatation, easier than the ones first chosen.

The applique is from the Library and the text could be embroidered.
Text CopprplGoth Bd Bt size 0.5
Striped fabroc on the edge is to "show " button hole or satin stitching .

I have been experimenting with printing photos on fabric and thought this one was fun. The applique is from the library and the background is a crazy patch with a red stripe on the side.
Text- Benquiat Bk Bt Size 0.5 This could be embroidered or printed wirth the photo.

Basically a plaid but with a curve

I like the way this postcard looks. For our swap I would write the word Fall in block letters in the lighter sectiion
of the block

I found these more difficult than a whole quilt.

Olympics (Chinese) 2008
I traced the Chinese from a scan of image in our newspaper.

This is my tribute to a superb athlete (and human being) Michael Phelps who won 8 gold medals! He surpassed a record of 7 gold medals won in the 1972 Olympics (Munich, Germany) held by Mark Spitz. I watched those events on TV, too!

Thank you, Angie Padilla for your book "Applique Drawing EQ6". I am working my way through and am on page 97 and have improved my drawing & tracing skills tremendously, thanks to you! I recommend this book if you want some really good tips on drawing. Well written and easy to follow.

The background represents the Bird's Nest stadium. Although swimming took place in "The Cube", I like the Bird's Nest as a background.

I got the swimming logo off of the WWW and then traced it. That's where what I learned in Angie's book was put to use.

This is a design I originally created in EQ5, before transparent GIFs were allowed or text. At that time I had to use a bitmap for the text and it had a white rectangular background. This particular postcard uses text as a GIF "photo" so that the background is transparent. Much nicer!

Short Pump, Virginia

I used the row quilt setting for this one, making the bottom row square. This setting makes it easy to change the bottom block to any block in the library. The top portion could be left blank for a written greeting or sentiment. If I make this for real, I'll avoid quilting through the appliues so that the quilting will look like a tree in the background.

When EQ automatically stretched the square hearts block into a rectangle, I liked the results so I left well enough alone! I kept the butterfly block square, but stretched the quilted heart lines into rectangles.

I love tropical vacations and can envision sending this post card while sipping a frozen drink with my toes in the sand.

I used the "One Room Schoolhouse" block from T&C - makes a great postcard! Used "7 Points Out" Border Block to simulate satin stitch around edge.
