February 2008 Challenge: Jelly Rolls! (Page 2)

Design a quilt that will use 2½" strips. The "Jelly Rolls" that are being sold in quilt stores right now are 2½" strips of many fabrics. Strip them, slice them, dice them, piece them, appliqué them! Templates for this quilt must fit on the 2½" strip, though you may choose to strip piece (made fabric stripes) some patches.

2" finished strips - reminds me of some of the Gee's Bend quilts.

Very interesting challenge. I started on the drawing board with a 6 inch block and drew lines that were no further than 2 inches apart and the fish magically appeared in the process. What fun.

Being restricted to the size of fabric challenged me to think outside the box or should I say inside the strip.

Strips lend themselves well to log cabin type blocks - this one is based on the Courthouse Steps block

I used fabric colors for the blocks then used the Random re-color wand to change them to solids to reduce the size of the file. All of the blocks consist of 2 1/2 " fabrics. I have not yet tried the Jellyrolls partly because I like to was the fabrics before using them to prevent bleeding.

This is basically a three color log cabin type quilt shown in batiks, although I can't say that I've ever seen a batik jelly roll. But I have lots of batiks so I could create my own "jelly roll". The blocks could be arranged in many other configurations--this is just one option.

Designed originally using the Moda/3 Sisters Shangra-La collection jelly roll.
This was my first idea to be used for the shop hop, but I liked my second idea -- the Scrappy Log Cabin -- better

Original design using Moda Shangri-La jelly roll collection, by 3 Sisters. I designed this quilt for the quilt shop I work for, to be used in a shop hop. The salmon color fabric for the inner border and corner squares was a Northcott texture.
I used the random recolor tool, then mapped to solids, to go from printed fabric to solid colors. So simple and worked great!
There are supposed to be 26 rectangles in the side borders, but the program wouldn't let me have more than 24.

Spring is in the air. The quilt is especially suitable for a growing girl. Instead of flowers, hearts can be substituted or her favourite shoe styles & sandals. Most girls love rabbits so that is why they are in the quilt.
I downloaded some of the Quiltmaker quilt motifs offered free by the EQ website and which also are offered for purchase. Two Bunnies were traced and saved as motifs. I wanted a pet rabbit as a youngster growing up but we had always lived in a city so that wasn’t really too practical.

Everything is in pastels. A hint of color (pastels) can convey an air of breathing space, peace and tranquillity helping to make a room a girls own.

This is my first attempt to participate in the monthly challenge. I had fun coming up with this design and, as I'm still new to EQ6, reinforced some skills and worked on newer ones.

I thought the 2 1/2 inch strip challenge would be great for my ever growing green collection.

I have been playing with the half square log cabin block for a while. It was perfect for the 2 1/2 inch strip challenge.

My grandma used this pattern and made dozens of quilts like this. I love this because it reminds me of her.

I used a pineapple bloc from the library. I never heard before this challenge of jelly rolls and thought that log cabin will fit well to these bands of fabrics.

Both of these blocks came from the EQ Library, I found Zig-Zag Corner 4 by once again using the Rotary Cut-able Search feature. I discovered this layout by playing with the Symmetry Tool.
The more I looked at this, the more it looked like an arial view of a colonial garden. But it needed a little more, so I searched and found the crocus blocks and set them on Layer 2. This looks best with Outline Patches and Outline Blocks turned off.

What a great challenge, we all should have some cool designs to "justify" going out and getting a couple Jelly Rolls.

Chocolates and hearts for valentines day.
I found the original pieced block by using the search feature and selected rectangles and triangles. I then "played" with the layout so that all the pieces could be cut from the Jelly Roll and that they are Rotary Cut-able. This looks best with outline Blocks and Outline Patches turned off.

The block, ironically is Hither and Yon, which fits the theme... as we search Hither and Yon" for our true love. I modifiied this block to give me the blank spaced for the applique motifs.

You'll be happy to know that while these applique motifs look small, The hearts are soft, round and very do-able... even for needle-turn. I've been working on Vintage Valentine... and those hearts make some of tthese guys look huge <grin>

What a fun challenge!

I used the "Classic Collection by Debbie Mumm" fabric from the fabric library, so that the colours could simulate the related fabrics that may be in a Jelly Roll.

I think this is an original design, at least I've not seen anyone put together this combination of traditional blocks. I wanted the Friendship Star to lead a friendly quilt. The jelly rolls lend themselves to strips and squares for mix and match. Log Cabins and Courthouse Steps surround the star. Then there are the bow ties, can you see them? The finish is Flying Geese to spread the friendship worldwide. Enjoy!
