September 2007 Challenge: Whole Cloth Quilts! (Page 2)

Design a quilt with just quilting patterns. This is traditionally called a "whole cloth quilt." Only quilting should be shown, for the quilting will create the design for the entire quilt.

Color the quilting lines with thread that has a good contrast with the background so they can be seen on the web site display. You may use different colored threads, but don't use colored patchwork or appliqué this time.

You _may_ use embroidery patterns, but they must be quilting designs.

I actually envision using cording in the channels to enhance the trapunto look.

I discovered that it is easier to actually quilt the stippling than to draw it!

Shell Flower Trapunto

This quilt doesn't look spectacular until you pay attention to the size. I made it for our guild's challenge last spring. The scale was 1 inch equals 12 inches.

It was sewn on pale blue batiste. The flowers all were 3D similar to making individual petals. So was the ribbon bow in the center. It was difficult to keep things in perspective and the stitches were very tiny. I also used a 1/8 inch lace to edge the quilt. It has become part of Ami Simms Priority Alzheimers Quilts but not yet pictured.

I added flowers to the basket from the library and used it for a center motif.

The Leaf meander and the waves are from the stencil library.

I used a lot of different combinations, many of which were just too complicated.

I grouped the bluebirds and then used wreathmaker to form the circle of birds and again the make the circle of flowers. The meander stencil looked too fussy so I used the diagonal lines. The corner trio of birds were added separately.

This is not something I have tried before.

Just a small design meant for a smaller quilt. Trapunto parts are applique motifs. The diamond grid is an open-ended stencil so that the block can repeat. I placed everything on Layer 2 to get a trapunto look (i.e. the grid is also on Layer 2, sent to the back).

Sashiko in EQ6 rocks! I turned off AutoJoin to create the repeatable sashiko designs. I created the design as one PatchDraw block. The block is set on
Layer 3.

After working with the Stencils and being able to use any color of thread for Quilting Stitches, I think that this center motif can also be done as Redwork. Can do Redwork by hand or by machine. Can use embroidery stitches or use a "Big Stitch". The border can utilize any Halloween themed fabric and the size of border would be determined by the motifs in the fabric. This would make a nice pillow or wallhanging.

I am really having fun with the Freehand Tool in PatchDraw! I am not an artist and this tool enables me to doodle just like with a pencil and paper.

I used the Freehand Tool to trace part of the Meander Quilting block cuz when I used the MQ block on this tablerunner, it was indiscernible as stippling.

I then made a Loopy design to use for a border and even made Loopy corners. That Loopy design will be easy to free-motion quilt.
I also like the Centering Tool for the blocks on this Custom Quilt setting. So easy to plop in the blocks and have them centered.

Harvest Basket

Whole cloth sampler design using blocks from the Quiltmaker Volumn I and the EQ Library. I love to both machine and hand quilt... if (or when) I were to make this I would use the pale pink for the quilt top, but I would quilt it with very light pink or cream. Alas, this doesn't show up "virtually"

Once again, a great challenge!

Here is a small candle mat to use with the Harvest Season decorating. The scroll border was obtained from the Custom Borders library and the outline removed. The Barnraising grid block was made by deleteing half the lines in the grid block in the EQ library.

Thanks for the opportunity to play with one of my favorite aspects of making quilts... doing the quilting!!
