August 2007 Challenge: One Patch! (Page 3)

Design a quilt with any of the styles for a One Patch layout. You may color it as a charm quilt or a mosaic design. Or combine the one-patch with blocks set on Layer 2. Be creative with using this layout!

Mountain and vally whit sheep ....

It's amazing when and where inspiration will strike! We were at a Appalachian Folk Arts Festival in WV listening to old time fiddle music and I was struck by the idea of flowers dancing to the fiddler's tune. The pieced background reminds me of time worn pavement.

The flower was traced from a copyight free Dover Publication Traditional Floral Designs and Motifs. (If you haven't checked out this source of design material... you should.) The enhanced patch drawing tools are awesome!!

I love applique and I'm always on the lookout for challenging pieces, this motif might make it into a wall hanging in the future... and I like to put applique on pieced backgrounds, BUT this is a lot of piecing! Great challenge!

This is the same motif as I used in the first quilt, it went through Wreathmaker so the flowers had formed a ring in their dance. This time the pavement is old bricks faded by the sun.

After I finished this, the sky looked like mountains to me although actually, I was trying to shade the sky, so I named the quilt accordingly.

I was just having a bit of fun with my colouring. The quilt uses the 'House' One Patch layout. They looked so much like teeth that I couldn't resist. :-)

I like the look of applique on a pieced quilt

I changed the simple design of the first quilt to where the stars are touching. I also changed the wreaths of flowers to be a variety and added a bouquet in the lower corner.

I wanted to design light hearted placemats with applique and embroidery. I used the simple horizontal hexagons layout because it reminded me of chicken wire. The rooster and hen are from Living Things - Pretty Poultry by Cactus Punch in EQ 6's embroidery library. The words are using the text feature for applique in EQ6. I used the copy and paste feature between the placemats to ensure the text on both matched. The individual patches are highlighted using the 'color thread' option.

The One Patch Layout style Hexagons (H) in alternating columns of black to white and white to black floral patterns form the background for pansy appliqué motifs modified from the EQ Block library and placed on Layer 2.
Vine & Picket Fence borders from the auto border menu were used to continue the garden theme out to the quilt edges.

In this quilt the Kite style One Patch Layout depicts an outdoor scene through the use of different colored patches - snow topped peaks giving way to tree covered mountains and green meadows running down into a blue lake with a grassy foreground. Embroidery designs of trees, flowers, grass, cattails and flying geese from the EQ library were placed on Layer 3. An appliqué of a flying eagle which I modified from the silhouette block in the EQ library was set on Layer 2. Two border styles were added to frame out the center.

I created this layout using "One Patch" Layout, then used the "Custom (Glide)" Patch Style.

After that I used the Oval and Freehand Brushes to color the patch using farbrics leftover from projects in my sewing room.

The Patch shape was helpful because the largest fabric swatch was no larger then 3 inches.

Gladiola One Patch

I found a X'mas Tree for this one-patch
quilt.
For appliqueing,
I chose nice monsters because I've never met Santa Claus.
They might have voyaged around another planet for a long time.

Japan

After designing this gladiola motif, I played with multiple positions and came up with Glad Gone Mad, just for fun.

Ottawa, KS

These gladiola motifs were fun to design, and I actually made up this quilt and plan to market it. It came out beautifully.
