July 2007 Challenge: LARGE Prints! (Page 3)

Design a quilt to display large prints. Find blocks to set into a quilt layout that will showcase beautiful fabrics without cutting them up very much. In your design, however, don't use a lot of prints that will make the project file very large. Give us an idea of areas that we can set our own collection of prints.

This quilt inspired of the fabrics bu Laurel

I used Hourglass Puzzle block which I redrew taking out the center lines.

Each fall when natures bounty has ripened and lays rich and golden we feel grateful for the gifts mother nature has so generously given to us. At this time it feels natural to show our gratitude by rejoicing in thanksgiving.

An older print was used called "Harvest Moon" from Stash: Fall 2006

This was a fun project.

Ireland

It's unusual to start a design with a large fabric print as a starting point. This was a learning experience for me. Large prints can sometimes add a surprisingly different look to blocks. I think that some nice surprises and new looks might come about by using these large colorful prints.

The fabric is one of Kaffee Fassett's prints included in Stash: Fall 2006

The blocks are called "Trading Post" and "Harlequin"

The block I used is from the EQ6 Block Library > 1 Classic Pieced > Whole Top Designs > Diamonds in Square.

I like reproduction fabrics, and I wanted to challenge myself to use colors I would not normally pick. So for this project, I chose fabrics from the 05 Antique - Double-Pinks & Greens section of the EQ6 fabric library.

This is my first challenge quilt designed in EQ6.

Alabama

The fabrics I used are in the collection
Jasmine by Pamela Mostek-Clothworks.
The block is Summer Winds.

I am always drawn to large scale prints, so this month's challenge was fabulous!

Large prints need little other distraction, so I used very few fabrics and very simple block designs.

I used Irregular grid # 9 from the Layout Library to showcase my favorite rose fabrics.

This is a quilt I am making for my grandson. The top is finished. Now I need to quilt it.

Used Block Base 3030 - Garden Maze by Nancy Cabot. The center is Laurel Burch's Felines & Canines. Used smaller block size to be able to see the fabric detail.

Sandy, Utah

8 inch blocks set in 9 patch style. Used 5 inch stripe sashing. Set fabric photos of my favorite flowers in 5 of the 8 inch blocks and set daisy blocks in sashing cornerstones. Could use any print instead of photos.

Once I started working on cloroing this design, it was pretty cool that the lilac fabric simply "fit" into their blocks... no fussy cutting was needed! This block is an original I drew to go with the star and flying goose block from Judy Martin's Stars and Sets Library. I like to finish a two block design by extending elements of the blocks into the first border so they don't look chopped off and this is how I finished this quilt.

What a fun challenge,

Haymarket, VA

I love these French fabrics and would hate to cut up the large print in this group. Here's my project for July.

This is an easy block to piece using partial seams around the center block. I would make the blocks 14". The squares in the block would then be 6", a great size for those large prints.

i saw the challenge on the 30th and as i had EQ open i decided to play. i made a version of the square within a square as i thought that would allow the prints to be seen but also enable me to have a 'radom' pattern.

Created for the July 2007 Challenge-Large Print.

This is my first EQ6 challenge entry and yes, it is not very complicatedd but no one said they had to be. I used the auto border feature and it is neat. Hard to decide on which one to use.

A lot of spinning fabric and fussy cuts, most of the points line up in the Sweet Juliet fabric. Also used special effects -9 layout.

Albany, NY

I started with one of the Drunkard's Path blocks and removed the interior lines. If you have the ability to see stereograms and look at this, the "bubbles" and diamonds in the border will "float" off of the background - entirely accidental, but fun :D

This is one of the fan blocks from EQ's library with a large rose fabric set in the "plain" part. With some of the petals colored a red to compliment the flowers it looks like hearts (at least to me).

Beavercreek, OH

Basic design for this wallhanging was inspired by Anita Hallock's Woodpile Quilts.
Although the woodpile blocks contain numerous pieces, dispersed throughout are solid blocks which can be used to highlight one, or in this case, several different focus fabrics.
I started with the paisley and blacks then decided to punch it up with the orange fabrics along with contrasting purples.

Ridgefield, NJ

Using the same design this quilt features a sunflower patterned fabric which is extended into the top and bottom borders, along with a grassy green.
Quilt pattern of a sunflower from the EQ Embroidery library was set on layer 3 on four of the center section solid corners.
As this version shows, the choice of fabric to feature can greatly change the appearance and tone of the resulting piece.

Ridgefield, NJ

I usually do not work with large prints so this was a challenge. I used a large floral which I fussy cut for the block centers and a large neutral print for the background.
