July 2007 Challenge: LARGE Prints! (Page 2)

Design a quilt to display large prints. Find blocks to set into a quilt layout that will showcase beautiful fabrics without cutting them up very much. In your design, however, don't use a lot of prints that will make the project file very large. Give us an idea of areas that we can set our own collection of prints.

When I think of big prints, I always think of Kaffe Fassett. I drew this block to showcase the various colourways of this floral print. The quilt border echoes the border around the block itself and ties the whole design together.

Guildford, England

Kaffe Fasset's peonies light pink print is very reminiscent of ice cream colours. The hot pink colourway of the same print adds a lively touch. The blocks are very simple, but when combined create the effect of circles of colour.

Blocks: flower petals, cross X, four fans-3 petals.

Braselton, GA

I saw an octagonal wall hanging similar to this at the "Patchwork Apple" in Phoenix, AZ. Fussy cut centre. Assemble octogon border by adding bird fabric triangles to centres of sides, then lay 2.75" or 3" strips instead of multi-pieced units on corners. A 1" or 2" dark border would add a good finish.

Fabrics from Jan 2006 and July 2007 fabric libraries of the month. Had fun with the fussy cut tool.

A created a skewed square and then drew lines from the corners to create a pinkwheel effect. This block leaves a large area for the feature fabric or for a machine embroidery block

Ontario, Canada

I selected the fabric first, then drew a block with three arcs and when four blocks are put together and rotated they look lilke a simple lily and give motion to the center of the quilt. I then selected colours from the feature fabric to complete the petals.

Ontario, Canada

This pattern is for the fabrics you just can't cut at all! Put a WOF [width of fabric] piece right smack dab in the middle. Those fabrics with a landscape scene -- the trees in the winter snow, the animals frolicking in the meadow, the rocky shore of the ocean, the hunting lodges, the mountain waterfalls.

A couple of years ago, I was in a Halloween fabric swap. I have TONS of 10" squares of Halloween fabric. The solid colors show where the 10" pieces of Halloween fabric could appear.

Change the black and orange to those purples and greens that have become popular at Halloween nowadays.

This is the quilt I am in the process of making now. I call it The Dressing Chamber because of the use of the Kimono Panels. I am using piping all around the piecing. The solid colors are actually various asian prints with large cuts in the borders. I will embellish with beads, coins, tassels, and buttons. I will quilt with metallic thread and sashiko in the borders.

Sleepy Hollow, NY

This is an original design that I've actually made using geisha panels. I named it - Lunch with a Geisha - because the scrap work around the panels remind me of a bento box. I used various asian prints in the piece work with piping all around them. It is quilted with metallic threads and I did sashiko in the borders. I embellished the quilt with beads, coins, buttons, and tassels.

I wanted a cozy holiday quilt to put on my bed. This simple design displays the cute featured snowman fabric without appearing too childish for an adult bed.

I love the larger prints and wanted a design that would not only showcase a beautiful floral, but also allow for creative quilting designs throughout. This is an easy design that only looks complicated to make.

Kansas

Designed for Large Print challenge, to showcase 2 oriental prints scanned from my stash. Designed in Variable Blocks, set with a modified Attic Windows block and half square triangles. Easy to modify for desired size, number of rows, etc. The balance between the floral pattern in the large blocks and the "wings" geometry in the triangles keeps it interesting to look at.

I've not actually made many quilts - uh - have my first one started. But I just had to have this software and I've had many hours of fun designing quilts. I decided to take the large print challenge - see what I could come up with.

Designed for ClubEQ challenge for July 07.
We needed to design a kit to use these fabrics. The large floral print begged to be put in a basket pattern.

O'Neill Nebraska

This is an alternate layout that we might use for a kit from these fabrics. I think the stripes add to the design.

O'Neill Nebraska

A simple quilt using the Snowball block and Flying geese in the sashing. Because of the scaling of the large print the 4"blocks may be increased to 8 or 12 if I should make it in fabric.

The change here is in the border as the plain Flying Gees looked tto much in the smaller border.

A modified courthouse steps pattern is used to display a large floral print.

Corvallis, OR

I love this circus print and tried to center the most dominant clown in each block. the Orange Peel block reminded me of the circus tents. There are several blue colors which would make a good border also.

Fernandina Beach, FL

I love paisley prints and the Orange Peel variation seems to add motion to the fussy cut blocks. You could also use the Orange Peel block in the corners of the borders if the block size was large enough. I also tried the quilt with the two shades of blue on the outer border, but this seemed more subtle.

Fernandina Beach, FL

I found this fabrics very interesting to
use in this design.I used the same block
in the desigs.
