July 2007 Challenge: LARGE Prints! (Page 1)

Design a quilt to display large prints. Find blocks to set into a quilt layout that will showcase beautiful fabrics without cutting them up very much. In your design, however, don't use a lot of prints that will make the project file very large. Give us an idea of areas that we can set our own collection of prints.

The actual size of the quilt was reduced to show off the fabric prints.

The grid network seems to float over a very colorful fabric. The size of the quilt design was reduced to show off the fabric print.

I used a five patch block from EQ6 Library for both quilts. I experimented with colours to see how many looks I could get by changing the colours.

I used Auto Border: Checked with Inner Border for this quilt.

Thanks Barb. and Andrea for the Challenge. It was interesting to play with the colours.

By an easy pattern and a large print , you can make enough quilts

My suggestion is to use just one long length of focus fabric, maybe a fabulous hawaiian floral print,or a batik in sunset colours. Applique a simple motif over top in a contrasting solid or monotone print, such as this "Summer Girl" block I designed.

Or reverse it - cut the appliques from focus fabrics and a plain background.

View this with Patch and block lines turned off. To keep the file size small I used only five prints. To make this quilt I would use 24 different fabrics.

Since I drew this in EasyDraw I had to link the circles to the edge of the block. To construct the block I would sew the circle to a single piece of background fabric.

To keep the file size small I drew this with only 5 different prints. To make this quilt I would use as many different prints as the number of blocks.

I kept the quilt size small (17") to better show the fabric (EQ6 tends to reduce prints to the appearance of solids with its scaling feature). If I made this in real life, I'd at least double the size.

The block is my variation of the 3 Blade Dresdon Plate. I have made similar blocks using strip piecing instead of individual templates.

Fabrics featured: Marching Band by Gail Kessler; Dimensions by Hoffman

This quilt is 15" square, both to show off the print and because there's always room for another small quilt.

The applique motif was inspired by EQ's quiting stencil named Rings and Squares.

Fabrics featured: Pretty in Pink by Hoffman; Elm Creek Quilts - The Christmas Quilt by Red Rooster Fabrics

For some reason, this has a sort of Asian feel to me. Maybe it's the reddish color or maybe, the Asian lattice windows.

This reminds me of the views of those formal French gardens as seen from the chateau window.

This wall hanging was designed to showcase large plaid fabrics. The pots and flowers are standard EQ-6 blocks, but I tweaked the flower blocks to eliminate a visual gap between the stems and the rims of the pots. (Note: The blocks were modified for presentation purposes only. When piecing, use the standard EQ-6 blocks to accommoddate the seam allowances. The standard blocks are included in this project file.)

The two-toned scalloped borders were added to offset the rigid lines of the pots and to enhance the homespun feel of the piece. They were created by aligning combinations of three EQ-6 motifs on Layer 2.

I used the window designs to enhance children fabrics; actually I sewed a similar quilt with a bright blue border.

I used a layout of EQ6 library for this quilt; My main difficulty was to find a nice border. That was the best that I came with even so I am not completely satisfied.

This I made in may this year. I made it because I wants to use my big flower fabricks. I use it every day when i shop. Here you can see it in real before it`s get ready.
