March 2007 Challenge: Mattress-Sized Tops! (Page 2)

Design a quilt whose primary design will fit on the TOP of the bed. You will have to pay attention to mattress sizes and keep the design on the top of the bed space. Only borders can hang off the bed.

I accidently found hearts in the border of this quilt, I like that!

Kiruna, Sweden

I really like this one! A bit of Japanese foulded squares and applqué, it glowes in the dark!

My mum made this block some years ago for a bed cover (!) and they are still waiting to be assembled...

This challenge was a great opportunity for me to lastly find a border. I guess the final quilt will look like this one except the quilted blocks will be stitched in white.

Size of the layout:
65.05 x 81.32 (my bed is 160 x 200 cm)
Size with borders:
92.05 x 96.82

This is another variation using the same block and sachings and other background colors. In French, the name of this block is "flight of swallows". I don't know its name in English.

The hexagons were coloured with a palette of japanese fabrics.

I love baskets, and I love the pinks and cheddar palette. This might even be do-able, scrappy with a minimum of basket squares.

Irish Spring

This would make a lovely quilt for a beachfront house. The corner blocks connecting the beachfront panorama were easy to draw and could easily be elaborated to make them a little more interesting. There wasn't really any other choice for the centre of the quilt apart from the Storm at Sea block of course.

It would be really fun to use seascape fabrics for this quilt, but I had to keep to solid colours to keep the file size down.

Guildford, England

This was inspired by a number of quilts I have seen with ladies holding hands around the edge. I have also been looking for a vehicle to use lots of lovely Japanese prints, and this would be just the thing.

Guildford, England

This quilt is for a bunk bed with the checkerboard hanging down.

The embroideries were inspired by the wallpaper border in Tara's room and were created using 3D Embroidery System.

The blocks are a variation of courthouse steps. There are two basic blocks, one accomodates the embroideries.

I didn't scan the actual fabrics but the colors are close.

It was originally designed in EQ5 and then updated with embroideries when I got my EQ6.

Single Irish Chain Block and modifications

This is an actual work in progress that has languished way too long in my work room. I won the Irish Chain Blocks at a Block Exchange at a LQS several years ago (Yikes!! it's enbarassing to admit it's been 6 years ago). I designed the little tulip blocks; the central medallion is a modification of a QNM pattern from the same era. All of the pieced and applique blocks are finished, but I couldn't settle on a border design. I drew and discarded several swags and finally said I'd "think about it later". This challenge got me thinking about these blocks. Little bunches of flowers around the edge of a party napkin were the starting point for the border sprays. I redrew the tulips and added the ribbon bow from the library.

Thanks for the motivation to finished the design! Now that Irish Spring is back on my radar screen, I can say it will probably be finished this year!!

This quilt was designed to have room to go over the pillow and have a pillow tuck. I started out with the swags and then modified a flower block to use for the flowers, filling in the large white spaces wtih quilting.

This challenge inspired me to browse through the quilt layout library. I had fun trying a variety of layouts. This one was my favorite. I found it very interesting how the chosen blocks looked in the different shapes. I also decided to try asymmetrical sized borders to allow for the pillow and tuck.

These challenges are fun. I find myself trying things that I may not have thought of. Perhaps one of the better features is that we don't actually have to stitch these quilts though a few of my friends think that I'm masochistic enough to try this one :)

This quilt has been designed to fit my bed (the corners are missing so the quilt could go around my bed posts), and the colours have been chosen to blend with the colours in my bedroom

All the blocks & quilting motifs have come from the EQ6 libraries

This will (hopefully) fit the top of a double bed. With the pillow tuck in place, the top row of flowers should lie nicely across the pillows.

I have recently enjoyed using on point blocks, alternating with on point chains, in a real quilt.

The quilted borders on the wedding ring quilt fit onto a CA King size mattress.

This quilt was designed for adapting a full size Wedding Ring quilt to fit the larger mattress without using a bedskirt.

Flying Geese? No! Rockets

Gram lived on a dairy farm near Platteville, WI. People would come from all around just to get a glimpse at her yard. There were hiding places for devouring a chocolate chip cookie taken on the sly or just for quiet time with a newborn kitten. Gram gave memories for all her grandchildren and some of her great grandchildren. Here is to Gram, a real lady.

Hazen, ND

Dad the whole family fishing each year in northern Wisconsin. He had a silver dollar for the one that caught the biggest fish each year. We numbered three brothers and me. What a treat to fish with my family and to eat what we caught.

This quilt required only coloring with border feathers on Layer 2. Printing out the templates, etc. will be challenging.

Calimesa, CA

I really wanted to see what I could do with flying geese and stripes between columns. The coloring affected the appearance thus the name of this quilt. Hopefully the geese in the borders are nearly the same as in the verticals.

Similar quilt using Custom Set and the Randomizing colour "wand"

My quilt top is for our King Size Waterbed. It measures 75" wide x 96" long with pillow overlap. Since our bed is much lower than most beds, because we don't have 2 mattresses, the drop is about 15 inches to the floor.

This first quilt I wanted to practice quilt stenciling. I found out that if I were to make this quilt, with the stenciling shown, it would print out onto 90 sheets of paper! I don't think I'll be making it any time soon :)

I made a nice small (7 1/2 inch) drop for the sides...and since our bed has wood all around the edges, I made no corner blocks.

This is another quilt top for our King Size Waterbed. It measures 75" wide x 96" long with pillow overlap. Since our bed is much lower than most beds, because we don't have 2 mattresses, the drop is about 15 inches to the floor.

With this quilt I wanted to practice applique` with quilt stenciling. It much more detailed than my first quilt.

I like the way I made the ends cut away from the main block on the sides. The drop on this quilt is 15 inches, with no corner blocks again.

We need a new quilt for our bed...who knows...I may just make this one! (Only 80 sheets of paper are needed for the stencil pattern in this quilt :)
