February 2007 Challenge: Blocks within Blocks! (Page 4)

  1. (EQ5 & EQ6) Set one block on Layer 1. Set the other block on Layer 2 above one of the square or rectangle patches of the lower block.
  2. (EQ5 & EQ6) Edit a block with squares or rectangles in it. Draw your second block inside one of these spaces. Recolor and add the new block to the Sketchbook. Set this block in the quilt.
  3. (EQ6 only) Use the new EQ6 "Merge Block" feature (page 259) to put one block in the square space of another block. Set this new block in the quilt.
  4. (EQ6 only) Use the new EQ6 "Create Quilt from Block" feature (page 175) and convert a qualifying Sketchbook block into a quilt layout. Set other blocks in these spaces.

This quilt was created by combining Aunt Addie's Album, with Martha Washington's Star. I love stars, and this quilt really reminds me of spring. I love the new merging possibilities in EQ6.

The base block and sashing set on Layer 1 were copied from a bedding advertisement I saw quite sometime ago. I thought the block layout was perfect for a collection of Southwestcolored and patterned fabrics I had collected. The tulips set on Layer 2 are color modifications of blocks found in the EQ6 Classic Applique Library.

Canoga Park, CA

The pieced block is BlockBase #2439, Duck and Ducklings. The appliqued piece set in the center is the "Tulip From North Carolina" block from the EQ Classic Applique library.

Just learned how to put a block on the second layer. HOW FUN! Coloring was equally fun!

I love using on point layouts and starting with a dynamic center and just play from there. Coloring is challanging but it is my favorite part.

Our class teacher (Vonnie, in McAlester, OK) gave us the challenge to enter this monthly challenge. So here it is.

When I get tired at working on a quilt, I take a coffee break. It seems to refresh me and give me the energy to get back and work on the quilt. This is where the idea came from. It is my orginal design.

I started with the "Create Quilt from Block" feature, placing "Triple Irish Chain" blocks in a "Double Nine Patch" layout (both from Classic Pieced > Chains).

Then I then tweaked the large blocks and created two alternate small blocks, to let the various chains continue uninterupted.

The center is two blocks both created using the Serendipity feature: "Storm at Sea" merged into "Mosaic 21(2)" alternating with "Mosiac 21(2)" framed by "Storm at Sea + 1/2 size."

The border is "Relaxed Vine with Bird and Berries," "Relaxed Corner (Out) with Bird and Berries," and "Relaxed Vine with Flowers" (from the Auto Border feature).

I layered the Chinese Lantern block in the Baton Rouge block to create this playful Christmas quilt.

I layered the "Crab Cake" Angle Play block in the bottom row of the "Boat" block to create this Maryland Summertime quilt.

I never have entered the Club EQ monthly challenge before and after receiving the new update version I decided that this was a
good time to enter.

Once someone wrote in the eq Info digest that she found it a great and fun way to learn the program.

Since I'm not the best at systematically working through each of the lessons in there order I have found that she is right. This is a more fun way to learn the programs features.

Poppy picture was imported and traced. The motifs were copied and pasted in the library Star block. Then the Serendipity Tool was used to merge the blocks.

I enjoyed designing this quilt. The poppies are used also in
the first quilt.

The Merge block feature is used. I tried the Tilt tool also with other blocks however I liked the way the two different blocks were sitting together in this quilt.
Thank you for the opportunity to enter designs into the monthly challenge.
