February 2007 Challenge: Blocks within Blocks! (Page 3)
Design a quilt in which you put a block into a patch of another block on the quilt. This can be done in several ways:
- (EQ5 & EQ6) Set one block on Layer 1. Set the other block on Layer 2 above one of the square or rectangle patches of the lower block.
- (EQ5 & EQ6) Edit a block with squares or rectangles in it. Draw your second block inside one of these spaces. Recolor and add the new block to the Sketchbook. Set this block in the quilt.
- (EQ6 only) Use the new EQ6 "Merge Block" feature (page 259) to put one block in the square space of another block. Set this new block in the quilt.
- (EQ6 only) Use the new EQ6 "Create Quilt from Block" feature (page 175) and convert a qualifying Sketchbook block into a quilt layout. Set other blocks in these spaces.

This block was created by inserting the block Twisted Log Cabin into the square in the same block using the new merge tool. I then saved the merged block and inserted it into the square. I repeated the oricess one more time This is a visual example of a concept called recursion in computing. A particular sequence of commands calls itself with smaller parameters until a stopping condition is met. In the quilting world, the stopping condition would be when you decide it is still possible to create. This quilt puts the block in the baby block setting. Brockport, N Y |

Thank you EQ for this challenge! I have really enjoyed learning and playing with Merging Blocks!!! I did not know about this feature and have had so much fun! This will certainly open up a whole new world of design for me! |

I used the wreath maker to draw an applique block, then used "Merge Blocks" to insert it into a King's Crown block. I used the same applique drawing to create a quilting stencil. Needham, MA |
I merged the blocks 'Flying Squares' with 'Washington's Puzzle' to create this new block filled with 'transparency coloration' ideas! In this on-point setting I've included all 3 blocks. Lincoln, NE |
I adapted the Single Irish Chain from the Library so that I could merge the rose in the center. The rose was adapted from the single flower in the Classic Applique Library. Roslyn, PA |
I used the Four Leaf Clover block from the Library with an adapted rose from the Library superimposed on Layer 2. Roslyn, PA |

This month I decided to work with a "One Patch Quilt" and thought, "I wonder how the quilt would look with no borders." Much to my surprise, I came up with some pretty unusual quilts with irregular shapes. I haven't played much with putting blocks on Layer 2, so this months' challenge seemed like a good time to play with Layer 2. Adding the embroidery designs to Layer 3 was the icing on the cake! They really make this quilt look like a doily. Ohio |
Cats are in the attic and the birds are in an Ohio square. northern virginia |
For this quilt I inserted the border cats into a churn dash blockset into a diamond in the square block. The center cat as well as the birds flying around it are also in a diamond in the square. northern virginia |

Using baby blocks setting, I used the merge blocks feature to combine a perspective box and a tile block Ottawa, KS |
This is the same setting as the first quilt but I used random recolor to get a whole new look, and used the rotate tool to change the configuration of the blocks. Ottawa, KS |
