October/November 2006 Challenge: Fruits and Veggies! (Page 1)

Use fruits and/or vegetables as an inspiration for your quilt design. Your design may be pieced, appliquéd and/or quilted and does not have to be a realistic rendering of the fruit or vegetable. Just think "yummy." - Barb Vlack

I was inspired by my first trip to Maine this year (2006) during wild Maine blueberry season. I loved the colors in the quart of fresh berries I savored. It was great to learn that blueberries provide antioxidants, because I'd much rather eat blueberries than broccoli! To further commemorate my trip, for the backing of this quilt I would put a collage of "Maine fabrics" with lobsters, lighthouses, and more blueberries!

More than a few of my favorite things are combined into this quilt design: on-point blocks, varied values in the backgrounds, garden maze sashing, prairie points, AND strawberries!

I altered the strawberry block and leaf motif from the EQ5 block libraries to create the applique block and quiilting stencil.

I have a packet of 6" squares with fruit and vegetables. I used a couple of leaf fabrics to give you the idea and not use too much memory.

Davenport, IA

The basic leaf and grapes came from EQ's Classic Applique: 1920's and 1930's album, I added a few twisted vines and rearranged the elements into a grapevine wreath, and added more tangled vines in the border. They could be just machine stitched, bias tubes, or couch fancy threads and yarns in place.

My favorite country for vacations is Greece. And I like Greek Salad!
Here is my "Greek Salad"created with EQ5.Hope you like it ,too.

In the middle there are tomatoes and lettuce.Around are eggplants and lemons.First border shows twigs with olives and second border is a greece ornament.

Pineapple Pineapples

Yes, I know that my strawberry is larger than my whole slice of watermelon. Why not?

This challenge may be the last one for some people to do using EQ5. Do you reckon we'll still be doing challenges when we're using EQ19? Now, THERE is a thought!

Sunnyside, Washington

With three months to work on this challenge, shouldn't we have come up with something absolutely stupendous? Somehow I didn't, but I did have fun.

I drew the majority of these fruit motifs a long time ago, just for the fun of drawing. This was a perfect opportunity to use them.

Sunnyside, Washington

I just made our favorite pie for this time of year this week. It is called "Harvest Pie" and has apples, pears, and a handful of carnberries in it. This pie is my 17 yr old daugther's favorite. This almost looks like a Christmas quilt although that was not my intention. The green represents the Granny Smith apples, red is for Cranberries and cream for the pears.

Texas

I thought it would be fun to use a pineapple block to make a pineapple. If you are really clever, I'm sure you can work out how to give the single pineapple in the top row its leaves.

Several times this summer I looked out my window and saw my cat sitting under the apple tree. I knew he would make a good subject for a quilt. To help position the same number of apples on each side of the quilt, I used the border: blocks and then lined up the apples on layer 2 over the block lines.
The applique blocks were from EQ. The checkered border reminds me a picnic table cloth.

Fall is here and it's time to harvest the apples. Using wreathmaker I designed several different apple wreaths and then placed them over the Crab Apple Block and then used one wreath as a quilting design in the plain blocks.

Practicing some of the things that I learned at a EQ class in Des Moines, IA. I drew simple veggies & fruit and set them in wreathmaker.

A Southern delicacy, Fried Green Tomatoes combine the tangy tartness of unripe tomatoes with the crisp sweetness of frizzled cornmeal.

This EQ5 tablerunner layout uses Block 3532 from Blockbase (Peeled Orange - Nancy Cabot) and various fabrics in shades of bright spring green, textured golden brown and sparkling red to evoke the special flavors of a favorite Alabama side dish.

Mary Alice's Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

4 or 5 firm green tomatoes (a little pinkish tint is okay but will result in a softer patty)

salt and pepper to taste

cornmeal (I use yellow, self-rising)

bacon grease or vegetable oil

Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Sprinkle with salt & pepper.

Heat bacon grease in black iron skillet till very hot but not smoking.

Dredge tomato slices in cornmeal and fry in hot grease about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Turn and fry other side. Drain on absorbent paper. Serve with dried beans, collard greens and cornbread, washed down with sweet ice tea. Enjoy!

This one is even easier. The central blocks are square in a square. The pieced border is square on point.

Keeping with the Fruit/Vegetable theme... I thought a Pear Table Topper would go great with the Apple Placemat.

The Block I chose is from the Block Base Library; 1511 (Vegetable Soup)
Print piecing templates with a block size of 14" x 14" to fit the Pear Applique` pattern.
One complete block and pieces parts of a second block are needed to complete the topper.

Who knows... this may turn out to be a class too ;)

Ohio

I am always trying to use the appliqué blocks in the EQ library for other things besides quilting.

This month's challenge lead me to the idea of making a large quilt block, and then turning it into an Apple Placemat.

The Block I chose is from EQ Library; 2 Contemporary Pieced; Log Cabin-Like; 7's
The foundation block needs to be printed 20" x 20" to fit the Apple Applique` pattern.

It took me a little while to come up with the pattern, but I it turned out just the way I envisioned it!

I plan on making this placemat, and teaching a class on it, at the sewing shoppe that I work at.
