June/July 2006 Challenge: Mini Quilts for Alzheimer's Research! (Page 3)
"Design a mini quilt that is really close to or no larger than 9" x 12". If you like, you may visit Ami Simm's website and see examples of minis of this size that have been submitted for her fund raiser for Alzheimer's research, "Priority: Alzheimer's." Get inspired, but design your own!" - Barb Vlack

This is my interpretation of the toll Alzheimer's takes. The brain gradually grows dimmer as time progresses. The Peace Dove blocks in the corners represent the person's soul escaping their body and reaching out to others. |
My mother-in-law Fran has Alzheimer's. She used to love to be in a garden surrounded by butterflies. I designed this quilt in the peaches and oranges she loved. |
For this quilt, I first used a strutting rooster I'd already drawn. When I checked the print display, I realized that I didn't want to applique 37 tiny pieces of fabric in a 6"x7" space. So I drew this little guy with fewer pieces. The pattern for him works a lot better this small. I am in the process of making this in fabric and I plan to substitute feathery thread stitching for the scalloped edge of the wings. One of Hoffman's Bali Handpaint fabrics works magic for color. The borders are paper-pieced and easy. |
I drew the center block 'Fanned Points' in the autmn of 2002, about a month after I updated to EQ5. My ability to think of a spiffy name for the block was a bit limited but I sure was proud of it. I've printed the pattern out for sewing -- about time, huh? -- using paper piecing for the oval portion, the dreaded curved piecing to add the corner units, and an appliqued circle to hide my sewing sins in the center. I love making small quilts! |

I love this border. It reminds me of a ribbon wrapping all around the quilt. I have used this border on the first signature quilt that my Mom and I made . We presented to my Great Aunt at our family reunion. Very easy and fun to make. I placed two blocks in variation into the center to give the quilt a "POP". |

All I did was take a couple blocks then cut and reshaped a them for the outer border blocks. Was very interesting to design a mini quilt. |

A friend of mine who is an accomplished musician has Alzheimers. This quilt has been designed with her in mind. The large black circles or holes represent the loss of memory - sometimes the music is there and sometimes it is gone. |
