June/July 2006 Challenge: Mini Quilts for Alzheimer's Research! (Page 2)

"Design a mini quilt that is really close to or no larger than 9" x 12". If you like, you may visit Ami Simm's website and see examples of minis of this size that have been submitted for her fund raiser for Alzheimer's research, "Priority: Alzheimer's." Get inspired, but design your own!" - Barb Vlack

Love - Oriental

This is my very first entry in the EQ challenge. Stars are a very favorite of mine. I just started using EQ and have been having a lot of fun designing blocks and coloring them. This is an original.

Inspiration for this mini quilt came from an art card I had. I plan on making this and submitting it for Ami Simms' auction

The centre motif is supposed to mean "love" in Chinese. Originally drawn for a wedding wall hanging, this pattern was used as part of a photo memorial quilt for each of 3 children whose Chinese father died suddenly. I used fabrics from the Oriental pallette of the month. Those who care for Alzheimer sufferers do so with much love.

Allie's Swans

A symbol for the Alziemer's Society of Canada, this mini forget-me-not flower quilt carries a double message.

I have recently made a mini-quilt somewhat like this and I embroidered and embellished it. It is very pretty even though it started out as confusion. Sometimes we don't understand things until we see the whole picture.

I created this block in a previous challenge, and while playing with the coloring, I noticed it looked like angels. I used the Lemoyne Star Variation and turned most of the lines to curves. It looks like twisted ribbons.

I laughed and cried when I read Nicolas Sparks' The Notebook. One of the most touching stories of how Alzheimer's affects the patient and the lives of everyone in the family. The swans and water lilies are original drawings and the out border fabric is an old Hoffman from Stash.

Bianca was my 19 year old cat who died last Autumn. I felt she was a fitting subject for an Altzheimer's quilt as she became very senile and confused towards the end of her very happy life. I miss her still and this quilt is a tribute to the joy she brought me.

My favorite flower with some of my favorite blocks... Cherrytree flowers for Spring, and so for a new birth, and so for hope to cure this disease.

I just learned that a best friend of my mum has the alzheimer's disease. This quilt is dedicated to her.

Every week, Ivy (93 years) is expecting her mom. And worried that she will miss her. She no longer recognizes her baby sister. But when my dogs visit she recognizes them, smiles and has a conversation. Those moments are special. I hope they continue for awhile longer.
The boys (dogs) seem to enjoy the visits as do I. Hugs & Wags,

From my older friends, who've recently passed, I know folks love to see white or light bits in their pictures and art. And familiar images. This is for Ken who has many good days, but seems to worry a lot. Hopefully, this reminds him of his home with Jill.

"Goin Home"

Being smack dab in the middle of summer and having just finished making some strawberry jelly was the inspiration in naming this miniature. It's 107-112 degrees in our area, too hot to do much of anything!

I got the idea for this quilt from my neighbours home. I always wanted to have a horse. My husband tells me that at least he got me close and I don't have to do all of the work.
I drew a lot of the quilt by hand and the of course used EQ's library for the horses, , clouds, and trees. So really all I drew was the house and sun. There are all kinds of
suns in EQ's library. If I wanted to make this quilt I would make it bigger but not huge.
It is doable. I wanted to have a theme of houses for my mini quilts. I thought it would be
a fun project to make four mini quilts using
different styles of homes and then put them up them up somewhere in my sewing room.
I have another mini quilt drawn. It has a row of
different styles homes. What I really learned about doing the "Mini Quilts" is to make sure
I am being realistic about size. Some that I did
I liked and would be fine in a larger quit. The size of the pieces would not be doable.
Thanks again Barb and Andrea for a fun
"Challenge."

Take Time to Smell the Flowers

I wanted to have a theme for "The Mini Quilt Challenge." I just played around with a log cabin block and came up with this.
I enjoyed this "Challenge" as always.
Thanks again, Barb. and Andrea.

Block is Monkey Wrench, slightly tweaked by using the rotate tool.

Layout is Irregular Grids 15, slightly tweaked by filling some areas with solid blocks of fabric rather than pieced blocks.

The use of specialty fabrics fools the eye by making a simple block and layout seem far more intricate. This is a nice trick to employ when working with miniature quilts.

Color and pattern contrasting the frustration or anxiety versus the calm that can be experienced by Alzheimer's patients. For my mother, who died from Alzheimer's disease in 1998.

Life is a gift. Take time to enjoy it along with your loved ones!
