April 2006 Challenge: Front and Back! (Page 3)

"Download the free palette of the month for March, 2006: "At the Seashore." Design a quilt with this palette and THEN design a pieced backing for it! You may use only the fabrics from this palette --- do not add any print fabrics, though you may use some solid colors. You may use up to 20 fabrics in your quilt _as long as_ the project file size does not exceed 1 MB. You must delete fabrics you do not use in your designs in order to make the file size as compact as possible. " - Barb Vlack

Under the Sea

This is my first Club EQ Challenge.
This quilt is made up of only the "Proud Pine" block, plus some plain blocks, with different colorations. It uses just a few of the more dramatic "At the Seashore" fabrics, plus solid black and yellow.

Los Angeles, CA

The back of the quilt is made up of two of the unlucky pine trees that didn't survive the storm; they're floating out to sea.

All of the seaside palette referred to leisure activities so I just had fun with them! I looked at the blocks with "Sea" in their names and decided on the Storm at Sea.

Roslyn, PA

Off-set Center Design 6 used for the backing (adjusted for size). When I piece the backs I like to include the label as a block, so here I have the name of the block and my initials in the corner block.

I used different colorways of the same print for this quilt.

These were just cute prints that said beach and fun to me.

This quilt uses some of my favorite blocks: Storm at Sea surrounded by Ocean Waves and then Lady of the Lake (all from the EQ library). Although I only used three blue fabrics in this version, I suspect it would be lovely as a scrap quilt.

For the back I chose one large Storm at Sea block (one of my favorites) surrounded by simple-to-piece borders that feature an interesting fabric.

This was my first center medallion try. I was intrigued by the textures in the grass fabric and the browns.

As a contrast to the front, On the Beach, the back is In the Water.

This quilt block was used for a baby quilt for our Quilt Guild members. We had more blocks and used fussy cuts.

Sheboygan, WI

I used a patchwork thank you card as the inspiration for the layout of the backing. I first made a block in easy draw and placed it on layer 1 in custom set and then on layer 2 put in the blocks using the layer 1 grid for the sizes. Leftover fabrics could be used for the backing. I made a label for the back and I also added binding to the backing.

This marks a first a combined effort with my husband helping choose the colours & patterns!
