April 2006 Challenge: Front and Back! (Page 2)

"Download the free palette of the month for March, 2006: "At the Seashore." Design a quilt with this palette and THEN design a pieced backing for it! You may use only the fabrics from this palette --- do not add any print fabrics, though you may use some solid colors. You may use up to 20 fabrics in your quilt _as long as_ the project file size does not exceed 1 MB. You must delete fabrics you do not use in your designs in order to make the file size as compact as possible. " - Barb Vlack

I just purchased EQ on 4-22 and rushed thru the lessons so I could enter this months challange. I am having a ball. I am thrilled at how easy this software is to use. My previous design wall seems so inadequate now. Hurrah for technology.

I used the same layout on the front and the back so the quilting patterns will look good on both sides. If not hand quilted you will probably want to add a border to keep both sides reasonably square.

I have been quilting for 13 months. I consider myself a confident beginner.

I used the "Byzantium" for this setting. I love tile used for floors and this would be beautiful to have in my kitchen or on a patio.

Just going for an ocean setting to sooth me as I sit on a beautiful tiled patio relaxing. Ah, what a dream!

This is my "summerfront" of the quilt. For me summer is water and the sea, a lot of cool colors. I don´t know if the fussycutting shows?

Kiruna, Sweden

I´m not so fond of heavy patterned fabric so this was really a challenge! This is my "winterside" of the quilt with warmer colors and a "sandy" edge so you can remember the warm, sandy feeling in your feet even in the middle of the winter.

Original table topper for April Challenge.
This project, indeed, proved to be challenging. Initially I tried setting the Lost Ships variation on point, but I couldn't get the fabric to rotate 45 degree without a "square" background... so this was Plan "B".

I took one of the fabrics into Paint and saved it as a bitmap; opened Irfanview and rotated the fabric swatch 45 degrees. I then went back into Paint and cropped the fabric to "fussy cut" the sailboats. Since I couldn't set the pieced blocks on point and have the sail boats not fall over, I set this as a table topper to justify why all the little boats are headed off in different directions. :)
This was a very good exercise in using Paint & Irfanview as well as sticking with a specific palette (that had a lot of busy prints).

Haymarket, VA

I used the Log Cabin block from the topper front and appliqued one little boat as a surprise.

I didn't get very creative with this, but the idea just kept going around in my mind so I gave it a try.

I used the Custom Set Quilt so that I could place a strip the full width of the quilt. I would sew the blocks to the middle strip. I used EQ5 Blocks for the Swan, Water Lilies and Fish and I traced the loons. I did a lot of resizing. I would make one strip showing the fish and I would join the first and third row blocks to the
centre strip of fish.
Thank you Barb for another Challenge and to the EQ staff for making this possible for us to do plus making available all of the fabrics we are able to download.

Where the daffodils are finally peeking up to say hi to spring.

I used one of my blocks for the centre. I had to do some fiddling to place the
centre piece. I would have to do some more math to get the back of the quilt
just right. It can be done.

I have only just started quilting. I have completed only two quilts. More recently I purchased EQ5. So I still have my Learner plates on when trying to drive EQ5. This is the front of my quilt - I tried to capture a landscape by the sea.
