February 2006 Challenge: 6 inch Nine-Patch Blocks! (Page 5)

"Design a quilt for 6" (finished size) Nine Patch blocks. You may draw patches around the Nine Patch to create a new block, but you must maintain the complete Nine Patch unit. If the Nine Patch is part of a block, be sure to size the whole block so the Nine Patch unit will still be 6" square. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to maintain a set SIZE for the target block in your design." - Barb Vlack

I created this Nine Patch Quilt Wallhanging for a class I conducted for the "San Diego People of Color Quilt Guild" in San Diego Ca.

The original design called for blocks finishing at nine inches and was made with African Fabrics. This version of the class quilt is perfect for a Saint Patrict's Day Wallhanging.

The Guild has decided to use my quilt design for their 2007 Opportunity Quilt. Their quilt will be much bigger.

The batik fabric and selected colors reminded me of a garden in bloom.

A block I designed myself to put a 6" Nine Patch at an angle within two sets of setting triangles -- this coloring doesn't necessarily show that off very well. The final square size is 10.81". (Sometimes that B.A. in Mathematics comes in handy... *grin*)

On point border nine patch are 8.5 inches across diagonal which will give a 6 inch block. 6 inch sashing provides another opportunity for a nine nine patch.

Which Way is UP?

This is based on a quilt I actually made using 6inch nine patch blocks from a block swop. Each coloured block is made of four nine patch blocks sewn together to enclose a square of wadding and the alternate squares are calico with an embroidered dog. The blocks are then whipped together making a reversible quilt. I made it for a local dog charity to raffle for funds.
I hope it meets the criteria!

A nine patch within a nine patch. I made this quilt, I think it was my first one about 1980. Cutting out all those tiny little squares pre-rotary cutter, but as I remember, I think I did strip piecing!

Victoria, British Columbia

I chose the Roman Cross block because it already had a 9-patch in it and I think it would make a great scrap quilt. The diagonal strips serve as sashing to draw it together.

Mission, KS

This would be an easy quilt to piece but I don't know how the colors would come out if it were done in true scrap quilt style. I think I would like it!

This is my first EQ Challenge. I used the 9 patch star and Indiana Puzzle on point. This challenge is a great way to learn more about EQ5!

Created for the February 2006 EQ5 Club Challenge: Create a quilt using 6" Nine Patch blocks.

The block Old Maid's Ramble was modified to include a 6" Nine Patch block. It was set into a horizontal layout with 6" sashing, which created another opportunity to utilize Nine Patch blocks. Additional 6" Nine Patch blocks were incorporated into both the inner and outer borders.

I love the intricate look of this quilt. It reminds me of a mosaic floor, but is not based on any particular design I've seen.. The blocks are 12 in, set on point. The 6 inch Nine Patch blocks are set into the center square (modified) of the Rolling Stone block from the EQ Library. There are also Nine Patches set into the BLPI border. The original Rolling Stone block is re-colored and set as an alternate block. I like the way the border seems unified with the quilt.

This is a four block quilt based on the block "Interwoven Puzzle" I found in BlockBase. Equal Nine Patch - Other.
I'm not clear at all on this classification. The grid looks like an even 64 patch to me. The sizing works like this, since the Nine Patch needs to be 6" square one block is 48". I'll admit this quilt is pushing the envelope in size as it is 114" square with the border. Humor me and we'll call it a King size.

I've got a large collection of Feed Sack fabrics and this top would be a neat way to showcase them. Of course, the top *has* to have some applique in it for me to be happy!

Great challenge Barb, you got the drafting/math cells in my head working again.

Haymarket, VA

Modification of Queen's Pride block I found in BlockBase, under unequal nine patch, curved seams. There were 24 snap-to points in this block and the Nine Patch portion took 12. The blocks are set at 12". I used Hoffman's Kashmire line along with some Princess Mirah batiks. The outer border is mitered and all the strips match do line up on the Edit mode but not on the quick view. That has me a little confused...

Haymarket, VA

Keeping up with the challenge has been trying but fun. Sometimes I have to have them say it is due tomorrow to get it done.
Thanks ladies.

Really liked the information we got on measuring the blocks. I had to figure out to use the ruler you must be in the quilt part of program.
