February 2006 Challenge: 6 inch Nine-Patch Blocks! (Page 3)

"Design a quilt for 6" (finished size) Nine Patch blocks. You may draw patches around the Nine Patch to create a new block, but you must maintain the complete Nine Patch unit. If the Nine Patch is part of a block, be sure to size the whole block so the Nine Patch unit will still be 6" square. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to maintain a set SIZE for the target block in your design." - Barb Vlack

I started with a Variable Point layout and made the sashing wider. I used several blocks from the 9 Patch block library, including the standard 9 patch. I played with the size of the larger 9 patch block until the ruler measured 6" on each side (EQ gives block size as 8.5"), and I made the sashing half the size of the block (4.25"). I decided the colors made it look very springlike.

The blocks are Nine Patch and March Autograph both from the EQ Block Library. I have been thinking of doing a signature quilt, but wanted to make it look a little different. So I used the combination of both blocks to make arrows pointing to the signatures.

I used both the Nine Patch and March signature blocks, but changed the colorway from Sign Here. This one can also be used for a signature quilt, but the colors make me think if Spring.

Use 6 inch "nine patches". I used the Baby Block layout under New Quilt. Then I colored it and came up with stars.

Texas

Use 6 " nine patch blocks. I used the baby block layout. I think I watched too much NASCAR racing last weeking and was affected by the checkered flags and crazy driving!

I found I could not use the tile-on-point border style and keep the required 6"block size, so I set the border blocks in layer 2.

I had to change the preferences to keep the Nine Patch blocks just 6" and I hope that they have stayed that way! This was set in the On-Point Layout with a block size of 24". I measured the blocks with the ruler, and adjusted until it seemed to be correct and then printed out a template to check for size. This worked out quite a contrast to the Variable Point Layout.

When setting the 9 patch squares, I was reminded of the granny squares my mother used to crochet. The alternate blocks were drawn using patchdraw blocks.

This block was designed while I was quilting in my sleep. It reminded me of the toy I used to play with as a child. I drew it in patchdraw blocks.

I am currently sewing the "weird" 9-Patch blocks. I took the suggestion from Barb to expand my 9 blocks into a bigger quilt. And this is the result!

I guess for this one, you need to have EQ5 in order to see where the blocks are...

Hello. I made my quilt with different 9 patch blocks. All 9 patch are 6X6" I drew all by myself. I have fun when I do it. I love to draw with EQ5.

Hello! Same quilt different colors. This is not my color, but its fun to try out.
