February 2006 Challenge: 6 inch Nine-Patch Blocks! (Page 2)

"Design a quilt for 6" (finished size) Nine Patch blocks. You may draw patches around the Nine Patch to create a new block, but you must maintain the complete Nine Patch unit. If the Nine Patch is part of a block, be sure to size the whole block so the Nine Patch unit will still be 6" square. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to maintain a set SIZE for the target block in your design." - Barb Vlack

This challenge inspired me to finish the top using some block exchange blocks from the Prairie Rose Quilters in Watford City, ND. Throughout the year we exchanged 3",6" and 9" blocks. I felt the 9" blocks were to imposing so machine appliqued the melon pieces on top of them. I am also planning to do some applique in the open green borders.

My daughter helped me name this quilt based on the colors. It is a modified Courthouse Steps block. The addition of the 9 patches gives it just a bit more interest without detracting from the pattern created by the lights and darks.

Nine Patch #2

This is my original design using the "Horizontal-Center Medallions 24" in the Layout Library. Can you tell I love purples and reds?

One thing my Cuzco loves is his paint brushes. If I leave them out, he runs past minutes later with them in his mouth. Being of royal Asian lineage, I'm sure he just wants them to practice his beautiful calligraphy. (Just an afterthought: these nine-patches are 6", but if I was really going to make this project, I think I would scale it down by half so that it would be wallhanging size.)

I guess I have idioms on the brain from last month :) Actually, I was making a quilt that had nine-patch blocks for the cornerstones. When I went to put the top together, wouldn't you know it, but three of the nine-patches were missing. I strongly suspect that my sweet Siamese, Cuzco may have had something to do with it, but he was only trying to help, I'm sure :)

Some one told me it is not a quilt until it is quilted, so I used the opportunity to play with quilting patterns. Not sure how they will show here, but they are as much fun to play with as the basic nine patch.

SOUTHWESTERN STARS -- AGAIN!

Could not stop with just the center had to add a 6 inch nine patch border. And a little more quilting.

I love simple blocks in simple quilt layouts. This would look good using lots of scraps. (I limited the number of fabrics to keep the file size small.) To keep the nine patch at 6", I had to calculate the diagonal size of the four patches and nine patches. This layout already had the large blocks sized at 6".

Eugene, Oregon

Montana has been my family's home for over a century. I like this Montana block from Create Your Family Quilts. The Montana block already had the nine patch center. This would look good with scrappy nine patches, but keeping the rest of the block with consistent colors - not necessarily the same fabrics. Because I used a layout from the Layout Library and had to keep the Nine Patch at 6", it made a huge quilt. In order to use a layout from the library and set specific size blocks, you need to uncheck "Don't resize contents............" under Preferences.

My affinity for all things Southwestern and stars seems to have found a home with EQ5. Both blocks are simple modifications of classic star patterns. The colors evoke the Southwest, at least to my eye.

I call this quilt Many Points. This is my first attempt at creating a quilt in EQ5 and although it is very simple I learned how to use several of the tools and was pleased with the results. I found this challenge was a great learning experience and may even try it again. I kept is simple by using one block and 4 fabrics.

I took the Hole in the Barn Door block, which is already a 9 patch and added another 9 patch in the center. I set them in Variable Point quilt layout with 3 inch sashing. I also set the blocks in the sashing and in the corners where the sashing crosses.

Nashville, TN

This is the same layout as quilt #1 except that I colored one block differently to make it stand out more.
