January 2006 Challenge: Idioms/Expressions! (Page 3)

"Illustrate an idiomatic expression. An idiom is "an expression whose meanings cannot be inferred from the meanings of the words that make it up." We use idioms all the time. So take a phrase literally and illustrate it with a quilt design. I thank "ForestJane" for this suggestion." - Barb Vlack

Idiom: Bent out of Shape

Two blocks (EQ Star 4 and Lattice Window) were "bent out of shape" to fit into the layout formed by Center Medallion Number 14.

I'm an EQ5 novice. This is the first quilt that I designed and constructed using the software. The scanned fabrics are the actual fabrics used in the quilt.

This was one of my Mum's favourite sayings when my brother and I were kids. "You kid's are driving me around the twist".

Blind Hen Also Find a Seed

Bonjour,
I thought at the beginning that this month's topic was hard but finally I got a lot of ideas; I will put the translations on the infoEQ list, it will be too long here...
Cheers from France
Hélène

These are some examples about heavy rain in different languages. I didn't have enough time to put all of them... except cats and dogs from the library, I drew the other blocks (letters were from Gordon's challenge, thanks!!).

Here in Norway we say: Many little brooks will be a big river. In English it means :Many a little makes a mickle !!
I think about a lot of small pieces making a big quilt.

There are a lot of sayings ,but not all very easy to make into a quilt :o)
This is the blind hen also finding something to eat meaning that even the most stupid one can find a way to live his life no matter what others are saying.

My first challenge participation.

Once again a fun challenge. The letters were from the exchange Gordon conducted in December.

Haymarket, VA

About the first of the year, my sixty-something husband began growing a beard, mostly because he didn't feel well and just didn't shave. After a few days, our daughter and I persuaded him to keep it awhile. As we discussed who liked it and who didn't, I asked him, "Do you like it?" The answer: "It's growing on me!"

This is the first time I've entered an EQ contest. I'm new to EQ and I absolutely love it! Thank you for this opportunity.

I used a star pattern for eyes, a crazy quilt for the corners & drunkard's path variation as the blocks. I tried to pick quilting that would represent the "saw stars" theme.

Our first granddog was a black lab puppy. He had never seen a cat till he saw the wooden cutout Halloween decoration over the door. He knew what to do. he was smarter than the dog in the quilt. Fifty years ago, we acquired a kitten from some neighbors in the married student apartments. He thought he was a dog. One day we saw him sitting under a tree with the other dogs barking at a cat they had treed. That's the sho' nuff truth.

"And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies, "

From Christopher Marlowe's The Passionate Shepherd To His Love

This "bed" is covered with rose blocks from the EQ5 library, which I turned into motifs and set on layer 2 in custom set. The bed block is set on layer 1. I did a search for blocks with the name rose and came up with about 200 of them. I chose just a few to use in this quilt.

Out of the Blue

This is my first participation in a block challenge and it was immense fun!

I chose a block that had an obvious mirror image to clearly juxtapose the "black" and "white". Then I flipped one block and colored it a soft gray to represent those things that are neither black nor white. I added the red border because, well, black and white need red in mvho. :)

If I were to actually construct this quilt I would choose a crisp white fabric and a black with a crisp white swirl or curvy design to offset the rather harsh geometric pattern of the blocks.

In Temecula there use to be two ponds and a water fountain on Rancho California Road where this family of ducks lived. There were signs at the four corner intersection that told us to watch out for the ducks as they crossed from one side to the other.

I really wanted a print with more roses but time was a premium. I could think of numerous ones after looking at the different web sites, but trying to decide which one to do was a challenge. My mother used to say life is not a "bed of roses". I used the easydraw to make this. I tried to import a bed and put blocks on it, but not that quick at that just yet.
