December 2005 Challenge: Square and Point! (Page 5)

"Make a quilt with blocks set "on square." Then use the same blocks and set them "on-point" in a second quilt. You may see a big difference in their presentation! Which way do you prefer? " - Barb Vlack

The 5 X 5 design was chosen to permit symmetrical rotation of the Shield blocks and to reveal more pleasing intelocking patterns in the Star blocks. They were not evident in a 3 X 3 design.

In hindsight the design would have been improved by modifying the Star blocks so that they matched the Shield blocks at their common edges.

Simple mitred borders were chosen so as not to distract from the central theme.

The 3 X3 design was chosen in order to permit rotational symmetry of the Shield blocks and to emphasise the Stars, with their interlocking circles.

As a Horizonal Quilt this blocks makes a nice second and third pattern.

But it sings to me on point.

I saw this block some where and have been wanting to do something with it. I know it may have another name but, it reminds me of Jackson Square in the French Quarter of New Orleans, LA. Since my birth place has been on my mind the last few months I throught it was time for me to put it to fabric.

May she shine bright again for another 300 years.

A classic!

I love these soothing colors. Set on point, the "wave" appear to roll across the quilt.

I was looking for an arrangement of blocks that would seem to show flowers growing with abandon. The block version worked best for this. This version has a venter block that is different.

Hazelton, ND

This on point version seems to me more like a stylized arrangement of flowers. This version uses only one block.
