"Make a quilt with blocks set "on square." Then use the same blocks and set them "on-point" in a second quilt. You may see a big difference in their presentation! Which way do you prefer? " - Barb Vlack

I used 2 blocks in the horizontal quilt layout and for the border I used the diamond blocks setting. It's hard to pick which one I prefer. I like the on point layout of the blocks but like the border on this one better.

This is quite static, even though there are whirly-gigs in the design

There is so much movement here.

I really like designs that give the illusion of curved seams, with no actual curved piecing. This one has the added benefit of only having to piece two kinds of block. This one would make a great mystery quilt pattern!

I didn't believe that switching to on-point would change the look very much. I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong, I guess...

On-Point

Which quilt is set on point and which is straight set? Quilt #1 is actually the on point setting. These blocks both have a strong diagonal component that gets lost when they are set diagonally. The holly swirl block is my original, the star block is from Judy Martin's book, The Block Book, this block is a variation of her Needles & Pins.

Either of these quilts would make a nice Christmas throw, and it could work up quicklt for a gift "next year".

Haymarket, VA

On Point setting for Dec challenge. I like that these blocks blend one into the other in both of these quilts. You need to turn the Outline blocks on to see the block outlines and the pieced borders.

The blocks I used were Garden Patch and Swamp Angel and I did them in Christmas colors in keeping with the season.

This one does not look so Christmas-y to me but it reminds me of crowns.

This quilt is now on our bed at camp on Lake Huron. The triangles, appliques and backgrounds are actually scrappy with many different light backgrounds and prints.
