September 2005 Challenge: Mantel Toppers (or Shelf Toppers or Valances)! (Page 5)

"Design a long narrow quilt decoration that can hang from a mantel, shelf, or act as a valance. The edge of this decoration can be straight or not. This is a great format for working with a virtual border made with motif shapes set on Layer 2. Measure your own personal base (mantel or shelf) and build an edge that hangs down from that." - Barb Vlack

Watch out for that third spider.
This almost gives me a reason to collect Halloween fabrics again.

To make this rather improbable Mantel runner the whole flowers, taken from the EQ block library, (Motifs), were recoloured and set in a single horizontal quilt block on layer two. Each was sized and flipped as needed.

The flower blocks were modified to slice off the tops which in turn provided the correct templates. These blocks were set around the runner, with each quilt's single border sided set to 0.00. Again the edge blocks were sized and flipped or rotated as needed.

This block is the Roman Villa block from the Contemporary Applique, Tile & Celtic Designs category. When they were turned this way (after much flipping and playing) I thought they looked like little stylized mice. Since I don't have a mantle in my home this would be a valance. And it would look like they would be watching when turned this way.

I colored the "Garden of Hearts" wreath set on the base row from the Christmas pallette. The gingerbread man and woman are based on a block in the book "Better Homes and Gardens 501 Quilt Blocks".

Let it Snow!!!!

The bordered plain block used for the valances was drawn while completing a lesson in "EQ5 Simplified" by Fran Gonzales. The heart-shaped flower set in the valance blocks was adapted from the Rolling Heart stencil which was set on the plain blocks on Layer 3.

This is my idea of a snowy fireplace runner.

The top of the runner has a bell stencil which has a dual purpose. All three of my fireplace shelves are only three inches wide and the tape I use to keep the runners in place make the tops look lumpy. So adding the design added texture and the lumps look like they belong.

I found the snowflake motif when I conducted a search on "Christmas". I wanted a stencil that would not take over the design but show up from across the room. I used thread that catches the light and at night with the Christmas lights on it glows.

The trees were added to carry out a theme that I have in the rooms. I did not want to add color so I make them white which helps the snowflakes stand out. The stars were made with gold embroidery thread.

I use the virtual border to add these trees.

Each year I use the same runner but to make them a bit different I add different tessels. Last year it was trees. The year before it was bells. The bells were way to loud!!! This year it will be puffy Santas.

This original design has a pieced pentagonal center. The valance blocks are unified by using the same center and same light blue background, but individualized using many red scraps for the star points. NOT VISIBLE: I used 23 four inch long pieces of navy ribbon as loop hangers for this valance (a hanger at every block seam and one in the middle of each block.) There is no batting, but a dark fabric was used to back the valance so light does not show through to see the piecing seams.
