September 2005 Challenge: Mantel Toppers (or Shelf Toppers or Valances)! (Page 4)

"Design a long narrow quilt decoration that can hang from a mantel, shelf, or act as a valance. The edge of this decoration can be straight or not. This is a great format for working with a virtual border made with motif shapes set on Layer 2. Measure your own personal base (mantel or shelf) and build an edge that hangs down from that." - Barb Vlack

Blocks from EQ5 & Sew Precise. Some fabrics from Quilt Wizard palette. I really must finish these blocks for this year. The hanging bats and ghosts were inspired by Barb Vlack's suggestion of motifs on a virtual border for this challenge.

This will be a housewarming gift for my son and his family - eventually. They are moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Irises at Spring time

Enjoyed this challenge as I learned something new. Used a stencil for this called a circle wreath from EQ 5 blocks.

This shelf topper has been designed to fit a shelf in one of my book/display shelves.

Spring has sprung, and the irises in my garden are starting to bloom, so I decided to use irises for this design.

A fun one with two of my favourite things - hearts and teddies.

I don't have a fireplace so took a wild guess at a size! There is a mixture of pieced and appliqued blocks, plus some quilting which both matches and complements the blocks.

Let it Snow

This is not for a mantel, as you can tell.. it is for my huge bay window!! The bottom row will hang over the edge...just like a mantel scarf would.
I have a collection of swapped theme blocks that are 8", and also 6" 9- patches.
I did not draw out the blocks I have, but used ones from the EQ libraries to save time. It was a fun project, and may just have to get made... I have several more holiday themes of blocks.. Thanksgiving, July 4th, Back to School....(that is a holiday, right??) They all could be substituted in this layout.

Another version of the bay window topper.

This one would use up the set of swapped 8" snowman blocks and snowy 6" 9- patches I have that are just wating for a home. I did not draw the blocks I have, but used the one from the EQ library. I am unsure of the origins of my blocks, so to be safe, I did it this way. It was also much quicker...
I altered an EQ library block to make the outer snowman blocks.
I used the letters from the motifs to make the Let it Snow block...

This fits on the mantle over our fireplace. The 8 pointed star is a motif drawn in Patchdraw. The top is not pieced as it will not be seen.

This fits on the mantle over our fireplace and we usually have an angel there. The angel is from the block library and slightly modified. The top is not pieced as it will not be seen.
