September 2005 Challenge: Mantel Toppers (or Shelf Toppers or Valances)! (Page 3)

"Design a long narrow quilt decoration that can hang from a mantel, shelf, or act as a valance. The edge of this decoration can be straight or not. This is a great format for working with a virtual border made with motif shapes set on Layer 2. Measure your own personal base (mantel or shelf) and build an edge that hangs down from that." - Barb Vlack

Swirling and Twirling Falling Leaves

I thought that this valance could be used
for either Thanksgiving or Christmas.
The motif flowers could have a Christmas colour change and voila we have a valance for stonefire place mantel. It could be made into a centre piece.
Instead of just having one pointy side I would make two pointy sides.
I read a great idea for making a leaf template. I don't know whether I read it in our digest, or online. This lady presses her leaves and then makes a template of the leaf when it has dried out. The leaf is put between two pieces of the heavy duty wax paper that I like for applique. Whoever wrote this said that the actual template came out on the wax paper after a few days. You cut the leaf template from the
wax paper which has a copy of the leaf on it after being pressed for a few days or you could iron it on a low heat.
I love fall. The colours are just so beautiful. We haven't had a change yet but it is coming.
Our family are praying every day for the people who have been going through this terrible time in their lives. Love to all of you.

My favourite time of the year hmmm well maybe. Fall is beautiful in our part of the world. We call it "Our Little Piece of Heaven."
I used the leaves from EQ5. While designing this it gave me an idea. That is to make dresser scarves for out dressing table and night tables.
This was a fun Challenge but aren't they all. When I first read what Barb is Challenging us with I nearly always say I don't know what to do.
Thanks again Barb for making me take one more baby step to designing.
Our thought and prayers are with you all who have gone through so much. Not only the nature's battle but for the young people who are challenged each day of their young lives in Iraq.
Bless you all.

Fall Piano Topper
eschooley

I just wanted a simple country look for the top of my piano that I can use from Sept. 1st thru Thanksgiving. I used a simple log cabin block with fall colors and drop down triangles. I was looking thru EQ's embroidery sets and saw these designs that I happen to already own and I decided they would be perfect.

Simple Scarf

Going with the "KISS" (keep it simple sister) concept here, I used the standard EQ Big and Little Points Out border option.
Omitting the corner squares should make this simple scarf hang perfectly. Ideal showcase for an elegant brocade in the large points - then use a yummy velvet for the small points.

The leaves look sorta silly, but they make a perfect place to attach the Jack blocks to the shelf. Omit the plain corner blocks so the scarf hangs nicely from the mantle. The Jack blocks could be made without the face on the reverse for a dual duty mantle scarf. Raffia tendrils would add a nice fall touch.

As I am doing a bargello cushion, I used this method for a part of the border and then designed some Xmas block.

Autumn Geese

I was not very inspired for the title... I tried again to use a scallop looking block that I design in easy draw.

I like too work with geese. This figurative geese I draw and made them in ceramic for 20 year ago, I sold a lot of them then. Now I have drawn them into EQ. It`s fun to play with them...

Here's a mantel cover that will cover all seasons until I find time to create one for each ocassion and season.

I felt that a mantel cover looked like a keyboard so why not make one. I added red roses for colour. I drew the keyboard in Patchdraw but if I was actually going to make it I would probably strip piece the keyboard and then cut out the bottom shaping.

This Self Cover is more of an all year around piece for me. The more I work with virtual border, the more I am amazed at what a person can do. Just proves to shows that a person can learn a lot from reading the help section of the software.

Decided to use the Savannah Star block from the EQ5 Libraries - Contemporary Pieced Piecing - New Stars section on this cover.
