September 2005 Challenge: Mantel Toppers (or Shelf Toppers or Valances)! (Page 2)

"Design a long narrow quilt decoration that can hang from a mantel, shelf, or act as a valance. The edge of this decoration can be straight or not. This is a great format for working with a virtual border made with motif shapes set on Layer 2. Measure your own personal base (mantel or shelf) and build an edge that hangs down from that." - Barb Vlack

Change the gray to black for an Amish look. I had to use gray for the colors to show in such a small picture.

Autumn Mantle Cover

I obviously still have more to learn! I couldn't keep the black outline around the Santa and houses without having the corner blocks (the ones I used to create the virtual border) show up also. But I did learn a lot about making the circular edge turn out like I wanted.

The measurements I used for this design are from my mantlepiece.

Convent Ramble -- Mantel Topper

Using Overlaid Blocks as a tool, I created a motif version of the 'Amaryllis Bulb' block.

This was designed only for the challenge, but I like the looks of it and think I may make it for our own mantel (omitting the side panels).

A topper for our mantel looks best without a side drop. This topper is made in five panels to make the applique more manageable. This also makes it easy to adjust for mantel measurements that are different from the one we have. The panels can be finished singly or joined to make one unit.

Turkey Valence

Since I don't have a mantel, this appliqué valence is for my bedroom. The valence will be over side drapery panels made from the same background fabric.

This valence was designed to hang from my office cubicle next to the coat closet. Where everyone will get a chuckle out of the fact that the sign the turkey is holding will say EAT HAM!

I don't know how to eliminate the white part when making the quilt, but those places are supposed to have no material so that the bottom row and sides will hang down. I am going to use this on the top of my computer desk.
