Club EQ Album: June 2005 Challenge: Altered Blocks! Page 13

Take a block from the EQ Block Library. Consider ways that parts of that block could be used to create two different blocks. In other words, delete units from one block to create something new. Use those deleted units to create a second block. You can do this with the block on the block drawing worktable. For the first round, delete lines that make units in the block. Save to the Sketchbook. Then recall the same block to the drawing worktable and delete the lines you saved the first time but keep the ones you deleted the first time. You should have two coordinating blocks to use to design a two- or three-block quilt.

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 2 quilts total.

Paducah Summer

When I split the Paducah Peony block and set the 2 new blocks on point, I instantly felt it was a good summer block. I really enjoyed playing with many of the beautiful fabric pallettes in the coloring.

Butterfly Garden

The Butterfly Fan block was easily adapted into 2 blocks that, when paired, evoked a feel of summer in the back yard.

Lattice Stars

I altered the EQ Star 3 from the library to make two different blocks by using some lines for one of the blocks and the remaining lines for the other. When put into a quilt one of the blocks forms a lattice work around the other.

Calm Seas

This quilt was made by altering the Storm at Sea Block using some of it's lines for one of the blocks and the rest for the other. I used tiles on point as the first border to repeat the small square that was part one of the blocks and a block border made of the center of the other block. I felt this added continuity to the design.

String Star

I started with a simple string star. By eliminating 4 lines, I created an asymetrical block to give some movement.
