Club EQ Album: June 2005 Challenge: Altered Blocks! Page 9

Take a block from the EQ Block Library. Consider ways that parts of that block could be used to create two different blocks. In other words, delete units from one block to create something new. Use those deleted units to create a second block. You can do this with the block on the block drawing worktable. For the first round, delete lines that make units in the block. Save to the Sketchbook. Then recall the same block to the drawing worktable and delete the lines you saved the first time but keep the ones you deleted the first time. You should have two coordinating blocks to use to design a two- or three-block quilt.

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 2 quilts total.

Ribbons and Stars

I used whirling star from blockbase and then removed some of the lines creating a twisting ribbon block.

Block 1369 Lucky Clover (Aunt Martha) from blockbase was used as the basis for this quilt. Once the blocks were on the quilt worktable, I did need to rotate and recolor some blocks. I like how the medallion in the middle has an uneven looking edge. The coloring of individual pieces after placed into the quilt makes a big difference.

Star Variations

The original block is North Carolina Star from the EQ libraries, and it is set in the center and the corners. The "knockout" blocks were created to the letter of the challenge by removing some lines, then going back and restoring those and removing the rest. Those 2 altered blocks are set in the alternating positions and colored to show even more secondary star patterns.

Fiesta Star Variations

This is the same North Carolina Star block variations as the other quilt, this time set in "On-Point Medallion-7" from the Layout library and colored from the Karen Stone pallette. The combination of the on-point setting, partial blocks and different color choices make it a completely different quilt.

My original block was "Time in Tide" and I deleted some of the lines from the original block to make 2 other blocks for my quilt.
I used all 3 blocks in one of the quilts in my project but only the 2 altered blocks in the other.

Different Choices

I started with Clays Choice and played around from there. A simple pattern but I thought that it might make a great baby quilt.

I used the Paducah Peony as my original block and then created the other two blocks from that.

"Storm at Sea" Variation

I have always been fascinated with the 'Storm at Sea' block. It immediately came to my mind when this challenge was posted.True to its name this quilt looks wild and unpredictable in this onpoint layout.
