Club EQ Album: June 2005 Challenge: Altered Blocks! Page 8

Take a block from the EQ Block Library. Consider ways that parts of that block could be used to create two different blocks. In other words, delete units from one block to create something new. Use those deleted units to create a second block. You can do this with the block on the block drawing worktable. For the first round, delete lines that make units in the block. Save to the Sketchbook. Then recall the same block to the drawing worktable and delete the lines you saved the first time but keep the ones you deleted the first time. You should have two coordinating blocks to use to design a two- or three-block quilt.

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 2 quilts total.

Indian Hatchets Altered

I used the Indian Hatchet block from EQ5 for this project. I just kept on moving the hachets around until I got what I wanted.
The original block is made up of what looks like four sticks. I just thought I would
try and see what could come out of them and make a doable quilt.
I figured out why that it could be made into a quilt by making strips and then cutting the shapes from the strips.
I will have to remember to watch if I find myself working on the bias which I think
could happen easily. I really learned a great deal from this project.
Every Challenge has challenged me to learn something new. I am still excited when I find I can actually design a block myself. One that is doable. Trouble is I don't want to stop. I keep on thinking what will happen if I do this but it always seems to happen when it is time to make supper.

Jewel tones - it's kind of dark, but when I tried to add a white or cream for contrast, I didn't like the effect as much as this more muted version.

Gingham and Stars

Something about the pinks in this one reminded me of the effect of gingham check.

I've been experimenting with hand dyed fabric, and now I have 3 fat quarters in shades of pink that are calling out to be used in a project.

Animal Quilt 1

I started with the block Storm at Sea, and deleted lines twice, so it became two "new" blocks, which are used in this quilt.

All the fabrics in this quilt, are from the Animal Skins palette, from June 2005.

I started with a Cross with a Cross block and pulled it apart. I like the look of cornerstones in it.

Stars in the Cards

I started with the card trick block and took away lines. The resulting blocks are not really new, but they definitely go with the card trick block!

I modified Dunce's Cap block. When I assembled them I tried to make the background disappear and found I had made a larger on-point star.

Galaxy 2

This time the changes are not quite the same and the background is heavier. The large stars are still there, but not so obvious.
