Club EQ Album: June 2005 Challenge: Altered Blocks! Page 6

Take a block from the EQ Block Library. Consider ways that parts of that block could be used to create two different blocks. In other words, delete units from one block to create something new. Use those deleted units to create a second block. You can do this with the block on the block drawing worktable. For the first round, delete lines that make units in the block. Save to the Sketchbook. Then recall the same block to the drawing worktable and delete the lines you saved the first time but keep the ones you deleted the first time. You should have two coordinating blocks to use to design a two- or three-block quilt.

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 2 quilts total.

Circles and Exes

I altered EQ Star 3 to make 2 new blocks. After coloring the blocks and setting them, I could see exes and secondary circles.

Lucky Clover Altered

I took the Lucky Clover block out of the EQ library and started playing around. I love the look of the chain and clovers. It looks simple yet exotic. I also placed the original block into the corners to give overall cohesion.

Jungle Star Altered

This one used the Jungle Star block from the EQ library. I like how it looked when I first took it apart, but it looked even better once I placed the triamgles back into the canoe like blocks; I'm glad I looked at Barb's Gooseberry Pie sample and saw she didn't strictly counter delete. Having the triangles back makes this look really awsome.

Stars and Crosses Redone

What a fun challenge. The hardest thing to do though was to choose just one coloration!

The Nameless Tablerunner

The original block is the Dogwood Violet block.

This table runner would probably be a challenge to make up with fabric - but it might be fun trying!

Three Sisters

The original block is the Sister's Choice block, and I modified it twice to give three different blocks for the quilt.

I modified it a third time for the main border block

Sahara Sands

A combination of two blocks adapated from the Storm-At-Sea block. The print fabrics and the solids which go with them suggested desert sands to me. With the print fabrics being African in nature, Sahara Sands seemed to fit the bill. ©2005 by Linda Dawson.

It Was A Dark and Starry Night...

Two adaptations of the Mariner's Compass block (the second Marianer's Compass in the Classic Pieced, Wheels and Compasses file) make the blocks for this quilt. The blocks were colored with African animal skin fabrics in black and white. I am fascinated by what can be accomplished with black and white fabrics and this virtual quilt really sings to me. © 2005 by Linda Dawson

Bears and Chicks

When I removed some of the lines from the Bear's Paw block, it looked like little chick heads. Hence the quilt name.

Red Stars

The centre block is the original 'Circle Star'. The others have had different lines removed to make two new blocks.

Southwestern Puzzle

I started with the Puzzle Ball block and removed lines to create several simpler blocks from the original block. I used 3 of these simplified blocks to create this quilt with a Southwestern blanket look.
