Club EQ Album: June 2005 Challenge: Altered Blocks! Page 2

Take a block from the EQ Block Library. Consider ways that parts of that block could be used to create two different blocks. In other words, delete units from one block to create something new. Use those deleted units to create a second block. You can do this with the block on the block drawing worktable. For the first round, delete lines that make units in the block. Save to the Sketchbook. Then recall the same block to the drawing worktable and delete the lines you saved the first time but keep the ones you deleted the first time. You should have two coordinating blocks to use to design a two- or three-block quilt.

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 2 quilts total.

Dancing Starflowers

Another placement using the altered blocks from the EQ Star 2 block. I used the rotate tool for the center design.
The pinks represents the flowers, the green the leaves, the blue is the sky & the pale yellow background is the sunshine.

Feeling Flaky

Original block was Spinning Snowflake.
The block was made of both pieced and appliqued elements. This was what I got when I split them into a pieced block and an applique block.

I am fairly new to EQ and this is my first challenge. It was fun and I hope through challenges I will develop more imagination for designs & fabrics.

Crossing Winds Variation

Made using the block Crossing Winds. Lots of fun to make. Just hope I did this right. Used an on point layout for this top. I made another quilt with the same block I love but decided to start over with a second block.

The Colors of Jewels

Made using the block Jewel. Lots of fun to make and color. The fabric colors remind me of an Amish quilt except for the fish print.

Old Dutch Garden

I gave this quilt the name "Old Dutch Garden"
You see this garden of small buxus (roses) and inside the flowers. These sort of gardens are always symmetrical. You can see this Garden by the canal houses in Amsterdam and bigger ones by the country houses outside.

Mayflower Garden

I chose the Mayflower (OCS/Wheeler) or Block 2009.5 from BlockBase as my starting block because it had both curved and straight lines.
I began by first eliminating the center crossed lines and the larger arcs in the corners leaving just four corner squares with the smaller arcs and the V opening into the corners. The second block was altered by eliminating all but the cross and centre square and the four large arcs.
Two more blocks were created by eliminating all the straight lines and then all the curved lines.
As a result I ended up with four altered blocks which I used in this quilt along with the original block.

Mayflower Tablerunner

The variations are endless - each time I changed the position of a block or the layout I got a different pattern. In this table runner, I decided to just use two colours - in one of the altered blocks, I reversed the position of the dark and light fabrics.

I used the Interlocking Stencil block from the EQ library to "quilt" the blocks in this version.

A Parisian Fantasy

I altered the Star and Chains block to get the open centered alternate block -- a perfect spot for feathers or applique. I used the Paris Please palette in EQ5 and a ribbon block for the border. It makes a very feminine looking quilt.
