Club EQ Album: March/April 2005 Challenge: Hide the Block! Page 7

Take a block, color it, and set it into a horizontal set quilt with a 3x3 or 4x4 layout. (This is the "before.") Then create a second quilt with the same block, same layout, and change the color in such a way that you lose track of the original block. (This is the "after.") This is a great exercise in coloring secondary designs, creating transparencies, or using traditional blocks with non traditional color combinations. This challenge was suggested by Jane Jacobson (aka ForestJane), and it is a fun one to create!

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 4 quilts total, which will give you two pairs of "befores" and "afters."

Time and Tide

I have the hardest time thinking of names for my quilts. This one is just named for the block that I used but it links nicely in to the name of the "after" quilt.

I now have five different colourings of this quilt. It is interesting to see the progression from "before" to "after." I liked this final version so much that I re-coloured the "before" version with the same palette. I would never have the patience to do this sort of thing with coloured pencils on graph paper. I'm so glad to have EQ5!

Girls Favourite and Clay's Choice

A re colouring of a 4x4 setting of the variation I made to the Clay's Choice Block from the EQ Library.

I used The Girl's Favourite block and converted it to a Stencil Pattern which I applied on layer 3 until I had recoloured the quilt, then I removed it.

Hopefully you can see the big Girl's Favourite block

Hearts and Stars

A recolouring colouring of a 4x4 setting of the Star Swirl block from the EQ Library. I had first flipped alternate blocks and rotated them .

I hope that falls within the rules as it is still the same block recoloured

Buckwheat #1

Block chosen for it's number of pieces to allow lots of coloring. I did several samples before settling on just 2 tops to send.

Chosen because it was a 6 patch with lots of pieces. I thought this block would give me lots of opportunity.

Block chosen for it's number of pieces to allow lots of coloring. I also did on layout on point but decided that a horizontial and on point layouts probably didn't fit the rules.

I loved the intricate look of this one. The design was a surprise when I was fooling around with the colors.
