Club EQ Album: March/April 2005 Challenge: Hide the Block! Page 3

Take a block, color it, and set it into a horizontal set quilt with a 3x3 or 4x4 layout. (This is the "before.") Then create a second quilt with the same block, same layout, and change the color in such a way that you lose track of the original block. (This is the "after.") This is a great exercise in coloring secondary designs, creating transparencies, or using traditional blocks with non traditional color combinations. This challenge was suggested by Jane Jacobson (aka ForestJane), and it is a fun one to create!

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 4 quilts total, which will give you two pairs of "befores" and "afters."

Star Light Star Bright (Before)

I don't know if this star has a name. It is my variation. I changed it so many times I lost the original name!! I got lost with my head in the Stars!

Northern Lights (After)

This is the identical layout of blocks. I coloured the block in several ways and then set them in quilt layout. Then I used the symmetry tool till I got a layout I liked. With the quilt on the screen I recoloured parts till I arrived at this result. To me it looks like stars with our glorious Northern Lights dancing around on one of our Prarie summer evenings.

Mosaic Medallion

I originally planned to use the same fabrics in both the before and after versions but the after one needed a stronger contrast than the before. So I ended up with different values of the same colours.

Take it from here

When I read the challenge this month I thought, "Hey, I do that all the time. I just need to go to my files and send one off." But when I looked I saw that that they all use two blocks not just one.

But I had so much fun playing with this idea that could not stop. I now have several samples of this type of design. My husband teases me about my huge number of "virtual quilts" but I think I might actually turn one of these into a "reality quilt" some day.

This block is "Mosaic, no. 5" from the block library.

Weathervane Quilt

This block was shown on Simply Quilts. It was demonstrated by Leriene Nevaril. This block can be changed into 3 different blocks but when set into a quilt and you change the colour you come up with the star layout.

Spinning Bouquets

I started out with the Cornucopia block from the Block Library but I wanted my bouquets on an angle so I needed to redraw the block. This gave me beautiful bouquets of spring flowers which then turned into . . .
