Club EQ Album: March/April 2005 Challenge: Hide the Block! Page 2

Take a block, color it, and set it into a horizontal set quilt with a 3x3 or 4x4 layout. (This is the "before.") Then create a second quilt with the same block, same layout, and change the color in such a way that you lose track of the original block. (This is the "after.") This is a great exercise in coloring secondary designs, creating transparencies, or using traditional blocks with non traditional color combinations. This challenge was suggested by Jane Jacobson (aka ForestJane), and it is a fun one to create!

For this challenge, you will be allowed to submit up to 4 quilts total, which will give you two pairs of "befores" and "afters."

What is it about PURPLE that I like so much?

I love purple, so it stands to reason that I would design a purple quilt for this challenge. So what to do with it next ? Check out

Where the heats are....

The block used is a modified version of "the school girl's puzzle" Don't be afraid :) Colors are our friends. You never know what you might get till you start coloring and look at all the hearts LOL. This pattern also gives you a nine patch look too. I love quilts that cause you to look for the other pattern.

Sun Peekin' in...

The block used is a modified version of "the school girl's puzzle" Playing with colors allowed this pattern to take on the look of sun peeking in and trying to come through the darker colors.

Spring Road

Ruby Road was selected from Block Base, straight set with one little pieced border to complete the diagonal line. Pretty "as is" but what fun to play with the challenge!

Spring Cross Roads

I saw the strong diagonal lines in the original block and wanted to use them to create the effect of a medallion set on point. Once I got to playing by turnong off the "Outlines Pieces" feature, I saw the first border surrounding the On Point medallion. The more I played with the coloring, the more I got convinced this was a border and kept trying in insert a narrow border for contrast!

This was a great challenge, way Too Much Fun Barb!

Jo Moury
Jeffrey's Stars

I wanted to play with the symmetry tool and selected a block with a strong diagonal line and a pieced background that entended to the edges. The border is a combination of the pinwheel block set around an original block drawn from segments of the center squares.

Jo Moury
Wreath of hearts

I was playing withthe symmetry tool until I found a layout that looked interesting. It wasn't until I started playing with the coloring that I saw the hearts which were created half of the starts. The blorder blocks in the first version were designed to showcase hte hearts. The pinwheel blocks in the corners of the border were pulled from the center of the wreaths.

This challenge has been a wonderful design exercise... my only problem is stopping!! Both of my"after" quilts are best viewed with the "outline blocks" and "outline pieces" feature turned off.

Dakota Star Stars

This quilt used the Dakota Star block In using one bright fabric, the stars really pop out. The border make use of the diamond centers of the block. I've had EQ5 for three months - this was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to trying another challenge.

Diamonds and Black Holes

This is a different coloring of the Dakota Star block. What stood out as stars in Quilt 1 was changed to the dark background color for a much different look. Used diamonds from the Border syles tab.

After - "It's almost Christmas"

Around the suburbs of Adelaide there are a lot of jacaranda & silky oak (Grevillea Robusta) trees. Just before Christmas, both trees flower at about the same time. The jacaranda has its blue-purple flowers on bare stems, and the silky oak has golden-orange flowers amongst its dark green leaves.
