Club EQ Album: July 2004 Challenge: Pieced Borders! Page 1

Use pieced border blocks from the EQ5 Block Library to create at least one border around a quilt that you design. You'll find four pages of border blocks under:
1 Classic Pieced: Checked Borders, Picket Borders, Striped Borders, and Triangle Borders.

Get acquainted with them and use them in a quilt design. You may want to consult the Design Idea Sourcebook section found in EQ5 Quilt Design. All the border blocks and the blocks that will help you turn corners are listed and illustrated. See if you can create more combinations.

Please restrict your borders for this challenge to pieced border blocks. We'll save appliqué and vines for another challenge.

Fresh Frame

When Barb issued the challenge I immediately thought I had to design a 'Frame " quilt, where the borders are a major feature of the design. I had great fun.
I think it makes a very traditional design. These colours give a fresh springlike feel.
In this 3 out of the 5 sets of corner blocks used to turn my corners are EQ corners, I think they give cleaner design lines. All other blocks are EQ blocks or variations.

Red and green should never be seen

The name was a favourite saying of my Mum's about colour so I had to enter this colourway in memory of her.
When Barb issued the challenge I immediately thought I had to design a 'Frame " quilt, where the borders are a major feature of the design.
I think it makes a very traditional . I did a scrappier one in 1930's type fabrics, which I liked better but in small scale you just wouldn't have been able to see any detail.
In this I adaped or drew 3 out of the 5 corner blocks used to turn my corners, Some would be a bit fiddly to make though. All other blocks are EQ blocks or variations.

Looking Up

This reminded me of looking up the inside of a tower with windows at each level to allow the sun to shine in. Although this small picture appears to be dark in the center, it is actually the lightest, with lots of sun shining in.

Bougainvillea Medley

This quilt highlights an original floral applique which I designed during one of Patti Anderson's Quilt University classes. EQ's Wreathmaker tool turned one branch with a single bud and three leaves into a lovely wreath for the center of my Bouganvillea Medley quilt with checkered border.

But No Red Hat

What an enjoyable and easy challenge! This uses the Checked Border blocks "Border 4A & 4B' and "Corner 4A and 4B". The corner block is square; the width of the side blocks gets progressively narrower.

The center applique was drawn for last month's challenge and rejected because it didn't look particularly Hawaiian. I still like it, though.

Mosaic Surprise

This quilt may not display well because of the plethora of black patch outlines. Nevertheless, I like it too much to throw it away:

The border blocks used are "Double Diamonds" and "Meeting Double Diamonds". They are head to head, with a corner block made by deleting half of the block and cloning and reorienting the remaining half.

Believe it or not, both borders are formed using only one coloration of each block.
