Club EQ Album: June 2004 Challenge: Hawaiian Appliqué! Page 1

Design a block in the Hawaiian appliqué style, which means it can be cut as one piece from a square of fabric folded into a 1/8 wedge with one edge of the wedge on the bias and the other on the straight of grain. Your project file should include the single wedge as one block and the full design that wedge would make as a another block.
You may create a block or a motif (a block without a block outline).
Also include a quilt that uses your Hawaiian appliqué block. Your design does not have to use Hawaiian figures, only the appliqué style.

Cats and Rats - Hawaiian Sunset

A totally original design.
The idea of Hawaiian cats and mice just popped up as soon as the challenge was issued. Coverting it to a pattern was another matter!! Thank you EQ for a lesson for EQ4 still on file out there. Then the mice were pretty big and so became Rats (nice pet ones of course <G>). So this quilt followed the idea that at sunset as we go to sleep our pets come out to play.

A totally original design.

So this quilt followed the idea that under the skin of the domestic pet exists its wild side (?)

Oriental Bliss

Mmmm... I really like designing Hawaiian applique patterns. The possibilities are endless! In my mind's eye, I can see my Oriental Bliss design made up as a lushous pillow, can't you?

Hawaiian Irises

Irises are one of my favourite flower, so I decided to try and draw my own for this challenge. This block is my original design.

The surrounding applique block was inspired by the article in the June 2004 issue of "Quilter's Newsletter Magazine" -- "The Great Frame-Up Scherenschnitte Frames". It seemed to finish off my "Hawaiian" style Iris block.

Irises

I wanted to use the single Iris motif as a quilting stencil so this is another variation of my "Hawaiian" quilt block.

Joy at Dawn

I was never overly impressed by Hawaiin style quilts. But that was before I discovered the fun of designing in that style. This design really pleased me when I used "Ode to Joy" fabric by Free Spirit.

My husband thought I should draw a roasted pig with an apple in its mouth but I opted for a swimmer. But who knows? A roasted pig might make a tasty design.

I recently have learned Hawaiian applique and this is my first EQ5 challenge. I'm looking forward to learning more from all of the blocks/quilts that are submitted.

I enjoyed doing these quilts. I ended up with 28 quilts which were all different.
I think I will make cushion with one of the Hawaiian Blocks. I enjoy doing applique.
What surprised me was that it wasn't as difficult to do as I had expected.
