Steps to the Alter

Silhouette challenge
I had just finished reading Earlene Fowler's book, Steps to the Alter. I had also found a wood pin on Ebay of the block, Steps to the Alter, so this quilt was just begging to be done. The silhouette was traced from free Dover clipart.

There's A Tree in the Meadow

We live about five minutes from Georgian Bay but are still near farmland and beautiful fields. I have a favourite tree that sits alone and at nightime it always seems to have a glow to it. The other day it was surrounded by wild turkeys.
I had difficulty thinking up something for a sihlouette. I was telling me son and he said "mom think of something that you like to look at." He was right, then I got too many ideas., most were out of my artistic talents.
I worked in layers for both of my designs.
I learned a great deal, one of the best things that came out of this Challenge was how to come up with an idea when stumped besides asking my son. I also used a few skills out of Pattie's book which I have just about finished. Then on to Barb's book..

Time To Feed The Kids

I traced this bird along time ago and can't remember where it came from.
This idea of feeding the kids came when we saw the birds scouting around all of the birdhouses we have. At the moment they are just looking for the right home.
They are pretty fussy. My husband said he is going to put up "For Rent Signs" up because they are so fussy.
Don't you just love spring?

Reindeer in the Evening Sun

I drew the block in easydraw and the reindeer I drew with a clipart format in patchdraw.

View through our front door window

I took a picture of the ironwork in our front door and traced part of it to make a motif.
Using the sherbet palette I created a watercolor background (not using too many fabrics because of file size!) which completes the impression of the view looking out through our front door window.

Mom and Babies

Both of these blocks are out of the EQ Library. Corn and Beans is also known by Hen and Chicks. So what better as a background for the applique of a mother hen and her babies?

I've really had fun with this challenge.
It's a good thing we only get to submit two quilts ... this is addicting!

Last week we had ducks fly into our small fish pond in the back yard for a little dip, they gave me the idea for this quilt. The quilt in the background is made up of Flying Geese blocks. This was a good opportunity to practice tracing of bitmaps to create the geese.

Come Into My Garden

I have admired these gate quilts in the magazines and it is on my "want to do someday" list! I started with a one-patch quilt using diamond shapes. I then designed an applique motif of the gate and place that over the diamonds in layer two.

Machine Dreams I

I've been thinking about doing something with sewing machine silhouettes, and so this seemed like a good start. I used the "Sherbets" palette for the sampler blocks, and a Jennifer Sampou print for the machine, to give it some texture and a more modern look.

An Evening Walk

This design is a copy of a tray I own. I tried several pieced backgrounds, grandmothers flower garden, watercolour etc. but I think one piece of hand dyed fabric may show of the design just as well.

Sewing Lesson

Sewing Lesson is based on a silhouette I own of the same name. It was my mom's idea for the spools as the background,
Mom is hoping to get her hands on this pattern soon. I can not wait to see what she does with it, that is if quit fiddling with it.
