Club EQ Album: December 2003 Challenge: Round Quilts! Page 5

Design a round quilt. You can use motifs and the virtual border technique (delete a border that has a motif covering it) to get a round outline for the quilt without having the square default quilt outline.

Good Morning Sunshine

I created the round motif first and then decided it looked like the sun, but it needed rays so I used wreathmaker to create the triangle rays for the sun. He still needed something so I drew a smiley face for him.

Terry DeVine
Christmas Tea with the Mad Hatter

Modified Flying Swallow block to make a frame to hold teapot block. This would have worked better with teacup motifs in rotated blocks but I've learned something of wreathmaker and more about patchdraw, graph pad, and virtual borders. I do want to figure out a way to play with this concept using Dear Jane/Hannah triangles if possible.

Terry DeVine
Flying Swallow TableTopper Tree Skirt

Used 4 plain blocks at 45 degree rotation for virtual border. The applique placement is based on 45 degree angle but adjusted for better appearance to my eye. Would have worked just like a pieced block if this had been a patch draw block with a background. I'd hoped to surround with one large wreath but could not keep center transparent. However served purpose of forcing me to learn more about patch draw, motifs, and graph pad. Chose a different 8-point star for design template but still based on Barb Vlack's Star Table Topper or Tree Skirt Lesson p. 146 in EQ 5 Quilt Design.

Naive Plate Quilt

Both the centre design and the circular border are motifs set on layer 2. A plain block is set on Layer 1 to provide a coloured background for the centre motif.

Cat Rug

Cat block from the EQ library. I've interpreted 'round' a bit liberally--oval seemed more suited to the size of the kitty. I think it looks like a design for a rug in front of the fireplace!

Round Quilt

After deleting the border, the quilt is round. Only the square block from the layout is still there, but it is hidden under the round block.
