Club EQ Album: December 2003 Challenge: Round Quilts! Page 4

Design a round quilt. You can use motifs and the virtual border technique (delete a border that has a motif covering it) to get a round outline for the quilt without having the square default quilt outline.

Basket

Creating the basket in patch draw, so that it could be set without a block line, was a challenge indeed!

davedd @ psouth.net

The center block first emerged when a quarter round block was set into one of the special layouts. I then took a picture, imported the picture, and retraced it in patch draw! It was origionally an all red quilt, but I missed that challenge deadline.. The small stars were done using wreath maker. A quilt destined to be totally virtual.

Linda Shea
Circlequilt

Made using patch draw and shape tools. Center used shape tool to make poinsettia and oval tool to make flames. Drew uneven flying geese with line tool in inner border. Created applique border using oval tool and arc tool for vine. This is my own design and my first try at using these tools.

Partridge in a Pear Tree

Probably due to the holiday whirl, my first thought when I saw this challenge was to design something to represent the Twelve Days of Christmas. I quickly realized that I'd *never* get all of the song's elements into a quilt design without going stark raving mad, so I decided to settle for just the partridge and the pears. I had lots of "trial and error" versions, including one that looked like a tiny partridge being attacked by a horde of marauding giant pears. Anyway, when I finished the basic design, I just couldn't leave well enough alone. I added the holly sprigs and stars to give the design a little more of a Christmas-y touch. As usual with a challenge project, I learned a lot in the process of creating this entry!

This is an original design, and it was quite a challenge! It took all day to get it to look the way I wanted and I still could spend more time perfecting it.

Although I read everything I could about designing this type of quilt, I got the idea of doing it this way while I was trying to sleep!

Midnight Sun

Cranberry Township, PA Mickie143 @ hotmail.com

This design was inspired by a Franklin Mint pendant of the same name. It is based on an event in Sweden, "The Land of the Midnight Sun". A festival is held June 20th each year to celebrate the eve of summer solstice, and the music, dancing, and merrymaking continue all through the night. The pendant evokes the glory of the midnight sun, and also the custom of the seven different flowers that a single girl places underneath her pillow to dream of the man she will marry. The pendant is made of fine black porcelain with raised flowers brushed with gold and platinum. I bought it with the intention of someday making a quilt from its design. I've already bought inky black fabric for the background and have started collecting various golds and silver fabrcis for the "metal" flowers and sun. My rendition of the design in EQ is made up of just two motifs placed in Layer 2. First I scanned the pendant and imported it as a bmp. to trace in PatchDraw. Then I drew a simple tassel and used wreathmaker to create another circular motif to suggest the fringed/tasseled trim (ala Charlotte Kleiner - thanks for sharing the idea, Charlotte!).

Sweet Cherry Pie

Cranberry Township, PA Mickie143 @ hotmail.com

Just played with curves and circles in PatchDraw for the EQ round quilt challenge and ended up with this design - what fun! In my head I keep hearing Tommy James & the Shondells' song "Sweet Cherry Wine", but to me the quilt looks more like pie than wine so we compromised.

A few years ago, when I first started using EQ4, I never would have guessed that drawing a Mariner's Compass would be the easy part. This border was my second complete attempt. I would still like it to be narrower. Also, I had a lot of trouble keeping the width of the interlacings even.

Circles of Love

This was my first attempt. Used Wreathmaker to create outside ring of hearts then drew the scallopes. Finished with simple heart groupings in center area. Selection of center area fabric inspired addition of circles to outside ring to echo berries in fabric print.

I belong to a small group of former Women Marines that are all Quilters. We get together the week of Christmas and visit until the second week of the new year. While our husbands golf, we create one quilt project. It was my turn to host the group and to create the project and instructions. This is what I came up with.

My Puss In The Garden

I set up a 1 block horizontal quilt with an 8 inch mitered border. I copied the cat from EQ5 applique blocks and set in layer 1 then got several motifs from EQ5 motifs library and copied the letter O from the alphabet blocks. I set the cat then on layer 2 set the letter O and adjusted it to cover the cat block corners and then went to the borders tab and deleted the border and Voila a round quilt. I then set the applique motifs around the cat.
